Anyone watched this? Looks like a new 6 part documentary on Netflix. Just started episode 2. Covers the Nuremberg trials as well as the rise and fall of the Nazi Party. So far, everything seems to be fairly accurate to me, although I lean more towards the Pacific theater in my WWII dives.

Only glaring error I found was in the opening scene, the depict a dramatized re-enactment of hitler's death, and he uses a Luger.

Agree completely. Have you heard the story of the WWI Allied soldier who apparently had Hitler in his aim and decided to let him live? I've seen it talked about in a documentary or two, but never dived deep enough to learn if it was fact or just a war story

I've heard the "I could have killed Hitler in WWI" story. I think it's possible.

That being said, I doubt it would make a difference. I tend to think of history as inevitable. If the Wrights didn't exist, someone else would have figured out the airplane.

Someone else would have taken advantage of the terrible situation in 1930s Germany and risen to power. Heck, they might have not been a meth addict who felt compelled to micromanage every part of the war. Or they might have taken Jews on as partners, not enemies. Imagine if German Jews were given rifles, instead of wasting resources to transport and kill them. Imagine all the brilliant minds who built the American Atomic bomb, had they stayed in Germany and built one there.

as opposed to a Parabellum?

historians have been arguing whether it was a bullet or poison that he offed himself first.

Heinz Linge proferred different testimony than others in the bunker.

I think Hitler mentioned a British soldier deciding not to fire on him during WW1. Hitler tied that into his "providence saved me" narrative.

Watched the first two episodes and a couple of things...

Nazis study Jim Crow Era laws and implement similar laws on Jews.

"Make Germany great again" used to describe Hitler's militarization of the Rhineland.

It was a Walther PP and not to be confused with the PPK.

It most certainly was not a Luger.

I watched Episode 1 last night

the actual history seems pretty correct

really dislike modern actors playing the Nazis- they don't look like them at all and they could just use video from the period

I think that's a tall tale

how could a British Tommy know it was Adolf Hitler in his sights?!

Hitler was predominantly a runner for his regiment- behind the lines.

as others mentioned- Hitler had a huge incentive to propagate stories of his miraculous surviving from near death experiences

all to prove to the world he was a godlike figure sent to lead Germany.

It was a Walther PP and not to be confused with the PPK.

It most certainly was not a Luger.
Right on both counts. The PPK was a slightly smaller version of the PP and meant as a "pocket pistol" for detective types. Otherwise, nearly identical.

A bit off topic but regarding the Trials at Nuremberg, pretty incredible story of the Chaplain who accepted the assignment to minister to the Nazi war criminals. Spoiler alert - many were born again Christians prior to their sentencing due God working through Henry Gerecke.

I first discovered Henry Gerecke's story as I went through a book called "War and Grace" with some other men from church. I highly recommend if that's something of interest. Easy reading and gets into some really cool stories from men and women during WW1&2.

I just started watching this morning. While I'm only on the first episode (and will watch the entire thing), I have not heard anything that should not already be known to anyone with an interest in this history.

What I did notice is unsurprising. Never let a bunch of leftists (Netflix) write their version of history. "Make Germany great again". Nazis = right-wing. To my knowledge, there never was a slogan MGGA similar to the recent MAGA here in the States. And nope, the Nazis are not the historical equivalent of the modern American right-wing. Yes, they were nationalists, but they were first and foremost socialists.
