Possibly. Sonar image looks like it could be a Lockheed Electra 16,000 feet below the surface.

Possible but seems unlikely to me. Maybe we will know in about a year when he goes back to the site.

Will be interesting to see when they get a closer look at the plane. Could be one of the US/Allied or Japanese planes lost operationally in the Pacific during WW2

Yep, although the image resolution is obviously horrible, those sure look like swept wings.

My guess is they're focused on the tail width. Obviously the whole thing is distorted what with the super fat fuselage and all. But yeah depending on where this is it could be any number of planes lost in the Pacific. I could even see it being a P-38.

As much as I would love for them to find Ms. Earhart's plane, I'm going to be skeptical until they can getter a better look at this (i.e., a direct optical examination). Also, I came across these reader comments in response to the story that ran in the WaPo:

According to the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery "the aircraft (if it is an aircraft at all) cannot be an Electra. The Lockheed Model 10 was built around an immensely strong center section that featured a massive 'main beam' that ran through the cabin and all the way from engine to engine. For the wings of an Electra to fold rearward as shown in the sonar image, the entire center section would have to fail at the wing/fuselage junctions and that's just not possible."

I remember reading the story about how they discovered human bones (one male, one female) and parts of an Electra plane on a remote island close to Howland Island about a decade ago. I've always thought that was a better lead than this one, but maybe the island theory was wrong.

That line led them to uninhabited Gardner Island where Amelia landed the Electra safely on the island's fringing reef.

The Navy fliers saw no airplane but they did see "signs of recent habitation." They thought that all the islands in the area were inhabited so they moved on. In fact, no one had lived on Gardner since 1892.

Earhart and Noonan lived for a time as castaways on the waterless atoll, relying on rain squalls for drinking water. They caught and cooked small fish, seabirds, turtles and clams. Amelia died at a makeshift campsite on the island's southeast end. Noonan's fate is unknown.

The bones were subsequently lost, but computerized re-evaluation of the bone measurements by forensic anthropologists suggests that the skeleton was probably that of a white female of northern European descent who stood roughly Earhart's height.
TIGHAR has found a site on the island that fits the description of where the castaway's remains were found in 1940. Archaeological excavations in 2001, 2007 and 2010 have found and recovered physical evidence suggesting residence by an American woman of the 1930s including several artifacts of the same type as items known to have been carried by Earhart. TIGHAR research has shown that serial numbers reported to have been on the sextant box found in 1940 are consistent with the make and model of sextant used by Fred Noonan.
Whatever remains of the Electra lies in deep water off the island's west end.

It would be great to put and end to this mystery, but to say that image looks like an Electra is a bit of a reach. Could be any type of plane, or perhaps it is not even an airplane.

Good analogy. Don't think a P38. P38 had twin tail booms. Nothing in that image suggests that.

Yep. Hard to put my head around Kiribati containing about 1.3 million square miles with only about 300 square miles of land.
