BUT you left out the part of getting called back to service in 1950 and having to fly F-84's (not F-86's) in Korea out of s88t hole forward bases for 2 years....
Drop 4 kids in the 5 years after WWII, run a farm, so I'm not subject to call-up.
Brings up a story from my father-in-law. He was playing football for Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) in the fall of 1945, having turned 18 that September. (That was their MNC season) His mom came to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans with his draft notice. (We're pretty sure he's the only survivor of that 1945 team.)
He returned to OKAM, cleaned out his locker, and joined the Navy for a full three year tour. He needed the GI Bill for college, and wanted to get his obligation finished. He said some of his hometown buddies made fun of him as he boarded the bus, as they had taken the option of 90 days active service, then going into the reserves. They thought he was a fool for going for a full tour.
When Korea rolled around, he had already served and was going to college, and all his smart@$$ buddies were getting called up for active duty. This time, he was the one laughing at them as they boarded the bus.
