That may have been the case, but in present day, confederate symbols tend to be seen as rebelling against the federal government. Which until last Wednesday may have been one of the more benign symbols of the confederacy. Seeing the confederate battle flag in the Capitol building while it is being ransacked was pretty shocking, just as if it would have been a communist China or Nazi flag or any other foreign entity.
