My son is learning about Theodore Roosevelt in school, and I realized I would like to learn more about the man myself.

Do you guys have any good book recommendations to get started?

I did a forum search and didn't see a topic, so I apologize if this has been asked recently.

I read this one, it is pretty good. Generally focused on his political rise to and then his term as President.

HW Brand's TR.

Morris is the go to as dcbower recommends but he is only recommending the second of a three volume history. The first is The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and the last one is Colonel Roosevelt.

The one where he explores the amazon and nearly dies is pretty good.

I have read all of those and recommend them all. The River of Doubt is after his Presidential days, and would make a heck of a movie.

It's the best biography I've ever read. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

But it is long.

You can actually read a couple he wrote as well - he wrote a lot of hunting book both about Africa and the American West.

I have two in my library - Hunting trips of a Ranchman, The Wilderness Hunter

Interesting that you seem to be saying it was the politicians of the era and not the circumstances of the era (massive global depression after a brutal world war with 40 million casualties).
I dont think historians have really put forward this scenario that Woodrow Wilson is the evil genius mastermind who set America on a path leftward.

If you would like to expand your study of TR read "The War of the Roosevelt's" by Mann. It discusses the internal fights between the Republican and Democrat wings of the family. It is very entertaining.

River of Doubt is an excellently written book. It present a different view of Teddy, not Teddy the political man, necessarily, but it shows a side of his character, a common man. How a Former President handled himself on this hazardous journey, with no pretext or ego. Its quite a good read. I recommend it highly.

"River of Doubt" and "Mornings on Horseback" are both favorites of mine.
