I'm headed out to Georgia for the game and driving. Spending the first night in New Orleans which I have been to on many occasions. After the game I think I'm going to head to Charleston, because why the hell not. A couple of days there then head back to San Antonio for Thanksgiving. Suggestions of sites to check out on my way back would be greatly appreciated.

If you're a history buff, I'd go see the Cowpens battlefield sight of the big upset. That's on my bucket list. If you're going to take the northern route home, that is I-40 across Tennessee, there's the Nathan Bedford Forrestt State Park. I still can't believe the PC police haven't got ahold of that one.
The person that is not willing to fight and die, if need be, for his country has no right to life.

Head north to Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain, then west to Shiloh Battlefield, take Natchez Trace South to Vicksburg Battlefield. Cut down through Louisiana and go through Natchitoches.

Was here to mention Shiloh and Vicksburg. Shiloh may be a bit out of your way, but Vicksburg is right on I20.

Best place to eat in route is the Mike Anderson's in the Holiday Inn in Gonzales, Louisiana

Would concur with seein Vicksburg National Battlefield but don't recommend the Natchez Trace Parkway. Not a lot on it and minimal facilities

If you are into music go through Mussel Shoals and see the studios there where tons of rock, country and blues were recorded

Of course Atlanta is full of cool stuff

Chattanooga has a lot to offer too

Great time for a trip too. Good luck

That's the attraction. It is a beautiful drive, not spoiled by towns, convenience stores and McDonalds.

Hit Mobile. See the USS Alabama. Lots of civil war stuff around Mobile too

True, but like taking Highway 1 in California, you better be content with going slow and taking your time as the speed limit is like 45 MPH. At least, compared to Highway 1, there are more opportunities to exit if you get tired of the pace and same scenery.

I would hit the Vicksburg Battlefield. Do a guided tour. My wife even liked it. Also see the USS Cairo which is adjacent to the area. The Museum is very good. Short of Gettysburg, ironically fought at the same time, the National Park's Service has done a great job with the battlefield and the events.

While in Vicksburg go tour the McRaven. It is not just another antebellum house. It is an antebellum time capsule. Two old maid sisters lived in it forever. So long that they were forgotten. They had to chop up furniture for firewood. Tree limbs grew in through some of the windows. When they died, the house was purchased and has been maintained in its original condition

The courthouse is interesting. Cannot believe it was never hit.

If you like antebellum homes, then head to St. Francisville, Louisiana. There area ton of them.

Oh it was hit and some of the patchwork is still visible today.

I'm trying to figure out a way to make the drive up from Baton Rouge to Vicksburg for sure.

Depending on how big of a hurry you're in. Take US 61 north through Natchez. Lots of history in Natchez, especially the National Historic Park. Then continue on 61 to Vicksburg if you don't want to take scenic route on Natchez Trace. (50 MPH)

North of BR is a state park gem Port Hudson and in St. Francisville is the Myrtles Plantation, America's most haunted house.

Yeah, I've always wanted to go to Longwood.

This might be the only chance I get.

I second Port Hudson. Neat little battlefield. Tons of battlefields front he Vicksburg campaign to see, Raymond, Champions Hill, Port Gibson. I'll be walking the entire campaign next May with my reenactment group. 90 some odd miles in a week.

So I think New Orleans up past Baton Rough and through St Francisville, Natchez up to Vicksburg. Then on to Athens eventually.

I was planning on heading to Charleston the Sunday after the game for a couple of days.
Either that or Savannah or maybe heading back to Atlanta. Not sure yet, playing a lot of this by ear. I need to be back to San Antonio for Thanksgiving, not missing that.

Natchez Trace proper has always intrigued me but I won't have the time for that this go round. Especially with the speed limits being what they are.

Thank, y'all.

I would love to see President Carter speak at Sunday school in Plains Ga but he is not appearing during that time
Charleston is a must see with Ft Sumter and also the historical area not to mention the food. Take a walking tour of the town if you go

Vicksburg was awesome.

I'll post pictures when I get back to San Antonio tomorrow. I'm about to go lose my shirt in the Golden Nugget

Actually almost paid for the entirety of the trip at Golden Nugget.

If you go to Cowpens, swing by the Kings Mountain battlefield too.

Sorry, posted before I saw you had already gone. Thanks for the pics! Looks remarkable.

Cowpens and Kings Mountain are two early battles that changed so much of the Revolution. The Over the Mountain boys fought the Brits relentlessly.

I know this is too late for the OP but it is an interesting study.
