It would have made sense with earlier research that the concussion from the blast would have killed the crew and broken the pipe (which they say broke around the time of the sinking) sinking the sub. However the same article says experts said the crew would have survived the concussion and the leak would have been small enough to put something in it to stop the flow of water. If true is it possible the crew did not hear the influx of water and ran out of oxygen?

I think they are still trying to determine that answer but the pipe was defective due to the way it was bent in fabrication creating a weak joint did it fail on its own or fail due to concussion is still under study.

This is old, but seems plausible to me. I suspect that whatever damage to the sub did or didn't occur, they were toast either way

It's really strange they aren't really any closer to an answer several theories and the leading one now was an earlier one, they bottomed out to wait for the tide to go back in, fell asleep and didn't wake up. New weather research says an unexpected front may have changed the tide and might have pushed them further out to sea. So many theories and always something to shoot them down. One of the hatches was unlocked but the other was locked. Did they try to get out but couldn't open the hatch against the water pressure? The sub was also still in blackout mode when recovered (black covereings on the inside of the viewing windows)

The hole in the forward conn window where Dixon was, was intriguing because pieces of the glass and a piece of the metal hull were found on the floor there. But no bullets have been found either in the sub or Dixon's skull so that may have been later damage. Very frustrating investigation.
