fond memories of being a grad student at UT in the 70s----I gave a guy a 55 for a final in which, among other things, he identified Hitler as our ally against the chinese in WW II. He explained that he knew the material, he just had trouble expressing himself in words. I suppressed the desire to tell him to try smoke signals (I assumed he had been smoking something) and just told him he did not even approach understanding the material.

Speaking of the blank check, there are reviews of two new books on the outbreak of that war reviewed in today's Book Review of the NYT and both sound interesting.
