I want to look at these two:

-Herman Hattaway, “Reflections of a Civil War Historian: Essays on Leadership, Society, and the Art of War,” University of Missouri Press, 2003

-Dougherty, Kevin. "Civil War leadership and Mexican War experience"

Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Freeman's Lee's Lieutenants
Coddington's Gettysburg Campaign
Connelly's Army of the Heartland and Autumn of Glory
Steven Woodworth's Nothing but Victory: The Army of the Tennessee, 1861-1865; Jefferson Davis and His Generals; Davis and Lee at War, and Leadership and Command in the American Civil War

Don't know much about the two you are considering, other than Herman is an eccentric guy with intersting but good perspectives on the war. The Mexican War book is fairly new but is getting great reviews.

check out
David Coffey's - Sheridan's Lieutenants
http://books.google.com/books?id=Gn-Aavb9ypAC

not the same depth and reputation of Freeman, but an excellent look at Sheridan and his men that later became the leaders in settling the Indian Wars - Crook, Merritt, MacKenzie, Custer et al

Call of Duty by Steven Wilkins is part of the "Leaders in Action" series and and is about Robert E. Lee. I don't think it goes into much detail on the Civil War itself. The series is pretty good, however, and includes books about other historical leaders (e.g., Winston Churchill, Theodore Roosevelt, etc.).

Just bought a book that is a comparison of Grant and Lee's leadership styles, but the name escapes me right now.

You might try this
http://uncpress.unc.edu/browse/book_detail?title_id=1127

It is about Wade Hampton, and it was written by one of my grad school professors. He is also currently in the Marine Reserves and writes official history for them.

Do you mean leadership of the man who instructs us how to live, or leadership of the man who teaches us how to fight? They are not the same thing, and they are not the same men.
