Just saw the movie Last of the Mohicans, and because of it my interest in the French and Indian War has peaked. I tried reading the same book and was incredibly bored by it. Apparently a lot of people don't find James Fenimore Cooper's book that exciting either (including Michael Mann who directed the movie). I've looked some things up on Wikipedia, but there isn't too much about the War. It seems this is a forgotten War, even though it changed the course of history.

Does anyone know of a well written account of the war? I would prefer a historical novel, but if there's a good biography about generals or battles that would work as well. Thanks.

I enjoyed "Savage Wilderness" by Harold Coyle:

Also recommended: "The Young Titan" by F. Van Wyck Mason

Both are excellent reads. Both authors are fairly accurate with the history the novels are based on.

The Bulletproof George Washington

This was a book that every grade school student used to read and has fallen into disuse.

Thanks for the recommendations!

If any of yall like baseball, I just finished "Clemente" by David Maraniss. A great, great book about the ballplayer, his life on and off the field, as well as what a great humanitarian he was. Maraniss also wrote "When Pride Still Mattered" about Vince Lombardi.

The French & Indian War
by Walter R. Borneman

is the most recent history, published for the 250th anniversary of the start of the war, I haven't read it but heard great things.

I'm coming a little late to the game, but I just saw this - if you're still looking, Fred Anderson also has a book called The War That Made America. It's the short version of Crucible of War (300 v. 850 pages...). I've read Crucible and would definitely recommend it, but it does drag on. This one might alleviate that.
