My daughter is a sophomore XC runner. She had an avulsion fracture of her hip last season and has continued to deal with tightness and some tenderness. Her ortho said that it looks like her growth plate hasn't closed and likely won't for a little longer. (She's almost 5'10" already...i'm 5'10" and mom is 5'5").

Many people have suggested arriosti. Does anyone have experience with their style of treatments? Other recommendations?

I went to arriosti years ago for a knee issue and I found it helpful. They had me do some in office therapy/exercises, but it was sticking to the daily at home stuff they prescribed that got me better.

In my case they were able to trace my knee pain to a back and hip issue that had contributed to my pain.

We actually just got back from arriosti. It was a pleasant experience. Got some good information, coaching on some running techniques that should help, stretches to do at home, etc.

My daughter had an avulsion fracture on her hip as well, from cheer, not running, but probably same difference. We had to rest her, much to her chagrin. We have used Arrosti as well, and it was good for pain management, but not for actually healing the bone.

She's healed from that fracture...but we're trying to avoid future issues if we can. More preventative at this point vs healing.

My son, 15 had an avulsion fracture, 2 years ago (soccer player). Rest is the only real solution. Took him 8 weeks.

Stretching and then more stretching to keep it from happening again

Unlike most XC injuries, this appears to be an acute condition, rather than one caused by overuse. You need to find out why an XC runner is getting an acute injury. Is there something wrong with her stride that is causing this level of trauma, or was it a one time thing like stepping awkwardly on a rock or incline? If there is a fundamental flaw, you need to fix it.

Personally, I find stretching to be a mostly pointless activity. Even as a 60m master's sprinter, the best warmup is gradual increases in speed up to 95%.

You may have some stretching routine that you've been assigned, but I wouldn't think of returning to workouts until she's comfortable doing strides. As in, don't pile up junk miles because "running slow keeps me in shape and doesn't hurt." Don't fall for that stuff. Use the time to eat right, sleep, study, and if possible, be ready for district.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

I'll second the idea that her form may be an issue. If you're near a big town, there should be running form coaches that can look at her stride.
