Adjustable dumbells and folding bench recomendation

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I havent lifted in 20 yrs. Dont want to bulk up or power lift just strengthen and stretch. Im 51 with a 4 yr old son and want to keep up with him better. Im a full time charter captain running guided fishing trips and just want to be more mobile.

What weight range would yall recommend? Im 6'3" about 250-260. Wouldn't mind being 235-240.... was looking at the Nuobell 5-80 pound set. Convince me i need more or less???

I see plenty of folding benches. Are there any that really stand out??

I have a spot that I can keep the dumbells and rack....and hoping for a folding bench in closet or under bed. I have no interest in a full rack gym set up or anything that takes up more space.

If you haven't lifted that long, start with some 5-45 adjustables.

Powerblocks often allow you to increase the weight beyond that but if you really get back into lifting above that then youll likely be looking at either a gym membership or buying a lifting rack

I'm 70 and have the setup TAMUAllen suggested above. It works for me but has its limitations. Probably all an old man like me needs though.

That Nuobell looks cool. I would get that if it is within your budget. I rented an airbnb recently that had dumbbells from 5 to 50 and that was plenty for most of what I would do with dumbbells. I usually work out with 70 on dumbbell press so that was the only thing I didn't have enough weight for.

My wife has a set of powerblocks that I've tried to use in the past when I didn't feel like driving to the gym, and I've found them to be awkward due to the shape compared to normal dumbbells.

If I were buying today, I'd either get a set of the Bowflex adjustable, or these Snodes.

I tried buying sub $200 adjustable benches and they were all flimsy and wobbly - so for this I say buy once cry once.

I have one from REP, I don't see the model on their site anymore but it's a tank. I'd look there or at Titan and set your budget at at least $300 and you will be set for dumbbell work and then some.

If you like the Nuobells those will be just fine it sounds like. They cannot be dropped however.

If you want something a little more durable but easy to change, may look at the Rep Quickdraw. They would be a great place to find a good bench as well. Overall good company and reputation and customer service is solid if you ever need anything resolved.

I had the Bowles 552 for several years and they worked well. A lot of plastic parts, though, so over a very long time, they'd probably break down.

I also have the Rogue folding bench. It's very well made and pretty heavy duty, so not the easiest to put away, but have had no issues with it. It If I had to do it again, though, I'd find an adjustable bench to allow for incline work.

All great suggestions. In the end, a lot of it depends on what you're most comfortable with. You definitely want to have enough options for various exercises. Bench needs to be stable. Quality is important too. Think in terms of things like what exercises you want to be able to do. Or might do later on even. For instance, you currently may do a lunge variation for your legs (reverse, forward or walking lunges) but later you might want to do Bulgarian Split squats on a bench. So you want the flexibility to do that with whatever set up you get....Having light and heavy options are good too. You may need 50+lbs for bench presses but will likely only need 5-10 lbs for lateral raises. Also, for exercises like lateral raises, smaller increments can be beneficial. Going from 5 to 10 lbs can be a big jump. Like going from 50 to 70 lbs on a DB bench. While it would seem like it is only 5 lbs, these are smaller, isolated muscles, so you may consider have increments that go 5, 7.5 or 8, 10, 12, 15, 17.5, 20 etc. Some DB do that and others don't. That is also something you can add over time as well. smaller single DBs are relatively cheap so it isn't a biggie if your initial set doesn't have those...

And in the end, there really isn't a "wrong" decision. I guarantee you that once you get into it consistently enough, you'll be adding all kinds of toys to make your garage gym better. Blocks to raise your front foot on split squats, another bench like an inline if you only have a flat bench, etc. Watch the Garage Gym Reviews guy. There is just so many cool things IF and when this becomes morte of a lifestyle for you. So start basic, and add on as you advance. Heck, it might be in a year or 2 your back asking about the best rack for your garage....

I have the Bowflex 552s that go to 52 lbs. Had them for almost 20 years. Work great.

I have a Rep AB 3000, great bench without breaking the bank. It is stable enough that at 275lbs I can use it like as a step with no issues.

I have a pair of 55# bowflex adjustable dumbbells, they are too light for most any pressing movement. The Nuobells, or if I get rich quick, a set of Reppins will be the replacement.

I like my eisenlinks. Durability and solid feel were my main priorities and these are tough and feel like traditional dumbbells.

I am about to buy one of those. It looks nice. I weigh a lot less than you do so if it is strong enough for you it is strong enough for me too.

I'd add some type of resistance you can wear when you're out and about with the little guy. Weighted vest. Plate carrier. Something you can keep tucked away and wear on walks, to the park, stuff like that. It will flat wear you out at first, but it multiplies walks significantly....especially when things heat up.
