Anyone have experience with MK-667 (ibutamoren mesylate)? Taken it as a supplement?

My son (18 y.o.) wants to start using this for weight/muscle gain. He's been monitoring his blood sugar level prior to starting, just precautionary, to make sure it's not affected (apparently it can be a side effect). He's a healthy kid, who's into fitness/weight lifting.

Curious if anyone has had experience with it.

Here some good reading on the pros and cons. I don't know why an 18 year old needs a GH booster.

I've never used it but heard it makes you incredibly hungry and can jack up a young guys hormones.

Don't do it!
Way too young to start messing around with that type of stuff. He has plenty of testosterone and GH circulating in his body.
Focus him on getting plenty of good calories, training hard, and rest. Results will come.

I'd rather him not do it.

He's just looking for any edge to gain more lean muscle...but I want to make sure it's safe.

Is he just lifting weights for the sake of lifting weights? How long has he been lifting? I would stop looking for an edge or a shortcut and just work on diet, sleep, and lifting. Consistency in all three of those is what you need. After that it just takes time.

At his age, keep him as far away from any extra stuff thats gonna involve hormones.

He's been lifting a couple years. He's very regimented about his routine, diet, sleep, water intake, etc.

Def not new to lifting. But like with other supplements (Creatine, Protein, etc)...he's open to helping his body out.

I just didnt know much about this one...

MK-677 is NOT a supplement. It's a research chemical. It's not FDA approved nor is it regulated like creatine, for example.

There's a published case study of a healthy 25-year-old who took MK-677 with a SARM (Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator) for just five weeks. He gained some muscle and strength during the cycle but here's what also happened:

  • His testosterone levels tanked. Free testosterone dropped nearly 86%
  • His cholesterol got worse - LDL went up, HDL went down - and stayed that way for weeks
  • Liver markers spiked suggesting potential liver stress
  • He lost bone density
  • He gained over 15% more body fat, much of it around the organs
  • And when he stopped the drugs, the muscle gains vanished. The fat didn't.

Now, the SARM more than likely played a role but it's a glimpse into what happens when you start messing with hormone-altering compounds. In my opinion, that's an unnecessary gamble for an 18-year-old.

Show him that. Perhaps it will scare him away from it.

Will do. Good info, thanks

All he needs is training, sleep, creatine, and lots of food at his age. Or really any age, but definitely at his age.

An 18 year old (or really anyone under 25) should not be messing with their hormones. Like at all. And really, I think no one should mess with their hormones until they have a medically proven issue, or hit their 40s, are done having kids, have no family history of heart disease or hormone sensitive cancers.

I remember being in high school and reading about pro-hormones - which were legal at the time. It was so tempting. But I'm glad I never got them. The gains would've likely been temporary, though I'm not sure what long term damages would've occured.

And these days, I think most high school athletes that are even semi-competitive are probably on something. It's just way too easy to buy online. Majority of fitness influencers online are also on it, though few admit it.

i would suggest creatine, and creatine monohydrate at that.

He obviously needs to be lifting and in a caloric surplus - people who have trouble gaining weight/putting on lean mass are not in a caloric surplus.

He does take Creatine.

He also intakes as many calories and natural proteins as he can. He's putting on good weight/muscle...just not fast enough for an impatient young man.

I nixed the MK-677. He wasn't happy...but such is life when you have a dad who cares about you

You cannot rush the muscle-building process, that takes time

Yep. But when you have an underdeveloped frontal cortex (ie..young man), you think you know more than the rest of the world.

My stepson was trying to gain muscle when he was 18-19 and wanted to start taking all this stuff. I told him to make sure he is getting enough calories in before he gets on any supplements besides creatine and protein. To hit his goals he had to take 4500-5300 calories a day, way more than he was taking. I was the same way around that age, needed 4000+ calories a day.

When you are under 25 your hormones are already at adult steroid level, there is no need to take steroids

I was once the young dumb 20 something year old. Didn't have anyone looking out for me or really get told what I was being given. Only really stopped due to noticeable macular degeneration.

After I stopped, energy levels tanked, anxiety ticked up, depression kicked in, weight gain increased and been fighting for 6-7 years now off and on depending on life stressors and such that would amplify conditions. Found out just recently that it all most likely stems from low T levels that dropped when I started getting it other ways. Now have to deal with HRT to stay regulated.

Don't **** with **** you don't have to when you're young.
