I have been dealing with some lower back pain for the last few days and despite doing every stretch and yoga pose I can think of or find, it has not resolved yet. I thought I was making some progress but today it is pretty painful again.

One thing I discovered today is strange to me and I was hoping there might be someone who can explain. If I stand on my right leg and lift my left leg into a "high knee" position (as in my leg is bent at the hip with my thigh parallel to the floor, and my knee bent so my lower leg is perpendicular to the floor), and then lower my left leg, there is a tapping/low popping sensation that occurs somewhere inside me. I can hear it inside my body and sort of feel it, but I can't place exactly where it is coming from but it is somewhere in the lower portion of my trunk. I put my hand on my stomach and I can't feel it with my hand but I can feel it internally, if that makes sense. It always occurs when lowering my leg past a certain point, and only on the left leg, not on the right. I have not noticed this in the past.

I am 34, slightly overweight but not obese, work a desk job, and am pretty tall (6'4"). I have a fairly sedentary lifestyle but I have been doing a lot of stretching and squats this week to try to get some relief. I am pretty sure it is muscular because when I support myself with my hands, it feels OK, but if I bend using just my core to support myself it is painful. I first thought it was tight hip flexors so I did some stretches for that and it helped but has not provided longer term relief yet. It is especially bad when leaning over in a seated position, like tying my shoes in the morning.

Any ideas? Should I be concerned with the popping sound? It's probably a nothingburger, but I found it odd that it happens on one side and not the other.

Look up snapping hip syndrome.
