Was on a short 4 miler this morning and was feeling good when all of a sudden my entire back just spazzed out, felt like a total shock that made me immediately stop and yell in pain. Had to walk home…extremely slowly. I can't turn to the left without it hurting, better to the right but overall very sore feeling. Anyone experience something like this before? Icing now then will hear later.

Sounds like a back spasm. I'd try rolling it out.

Probably weak abs. Strengthen your core.

Stick to heat for the back. How old are your shoes? Any previous back issues or other orthopedic concerns?

In past years sometimes a small part of my lower back would "kink" a bit during a run but would go away within 4-5 minutes. Nothing like what I experienced today- I do body pump class at the y twice a week so maybe tweaked from this weeks lifting- unsure. New shoes, started with them about 3 weeks ago. I'm a 37 y/o female who has had 3 kids so yeah, my core could definitely use some work! Thanks for the suggestions.

I ran 8 miles the past two weekends and have felt great, so a big let down!

I've got it, and missing running terribly.
Walking just doesn't provide the same impact.

Likely from your running form, was the 4 miler at a faster pace than the 8 mile? There are lots of things that could cause back pain, anything from hitting too far towards the back of your feet, leaning too far forward, striding too long, weak core, etc. that could cause it.

Could also be a muscle weakness in your core, hips, quads, or hammies.

My first thought too.

Try rolling out your hamstrings, tight hamstrings can have a big impact on the back.

Ab strength and tight hamstrings will be the two lowest hanging fruit to look into first.

Yep, increasing the volume of resistance training in the lower back will do so much

Had a similar experience in August. Absolutely brutal, horrible case of the olds.

Do these:
Cobra Push Ups (I do sets of 10 multiple times per day)
Downward Dog
Child Pose
Cat/Cow Pose

I've never done yoga in my life, but do the above poses at home and they have greatly helped my back.

Thanks for the all tips. Like I said, I do lifting through body pump ymca class and have felt great and stronger. My pace was about 10 seconds faster than my 8 miler. Time to stretch more!
