Was recently diagnosed with mild scoliosis (14 degree) at age 51.
Anyone else have scoliosis that was discovered later in life? It was a real shock at first, now I'm starting to deal with it. The Doc said continue to exercise, stretch etc. Not much can or needs to be done at this point beyond that. He suggested no bullriding, tackle football or trampoline activity. So that's a bummer.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Im currently seeing a patient with a 54 degree tilt in her spine that we were able to get out of pain rather quickly. 14 isnt much. If you are interested there are physical therapists who specialize in treating scoliosis but at your age it wont correct that 14 degrees but will get you out of pain if you are having some.

I'm not in much pain right now from the Scoliosis, it was only discovered when I threw out my back & got an xray as a precaution (My Dad was diagnosed with Scoliosis in his 70's)

I'm more interested in anything I can do to slow down any additional curvature if possible.

There are Schroth method practitioners that work with people just with scoliosis. If you are in the Austin area i can easily help you with this.

I really liked the Dr. who looked at me, but he never mentioned the Schroth method.
I would prefer to keep this at bay as long as possible.

Thanks for mentioning the Schroth method. Found out a PT clinic near me does it. Definitely going to look into it. I was diagnosed with it when I was 21.

I'm curious - if you don't mind how much curvature did you have at 21? How much has it progressed over the years? I can PM you as well

First, was this diagnosed on a standing X-ray? Sometimes when you get a CT or MRI, you might have a curve due to your position in the scanner which is not there or is less prominent when you stand.

Many people are walking around with a mild curve that is not causing an issue. If it is a true curve, you have probably had it for sometime without knowing it.

PT and maintenance exercises are really all you are going to do at this point.

It wasn't bad. About like yours. That was a long time ago, so I don't remember the exact number.

A chiro resolved the pain (I was having back spasms at the time). I went for adjustments once a month for several years but stopped in about 2018. Got lazy.

It doesn't hurt like it did at first, but it flares up sometimes. Also, my shoulder on the curve side seems to be higher than it used to be, and that shoulder blade sticks out a little more, My rib cage is pretty bowed out on that side, so sitting in some types of chairs smarts pretty good. I had to get a chest x-ray 3 years ago. When the tech saw the image, he noticed the curve right away.

I've been using a foam roller some and trying harder to mind my posture, but seeing this thread has made me want to seek a PT's help.
