Howdy Ags,

Looking for some info on any of the DNA type testing and if anybody has done these. Any personal stories would be welcomed.

I've looked into it because I'm interested in optimizing my nutritional intake. I've tried many different diets and work out quite a bit, but have never been able to completely cut down like I'd like to. I also seem to not have as much energy during the day as I feel like I should at 34 years of age. I wonder if this may be a way to figure out what specific supplements, if any, I may need.

Additionally, my wife has history of cancer in her family this may be a way to get ahead.

To be completely frank, I don't think you need a DNA test to tell you that eating a higher percentage of protein in your diet to help with overall health- especially with retaining muscle. But plenty of places will gladly take your money to tell you the same thing. All you've done is lost money

The cancer issue is another story

I also JUST saw a post yesterday on Facebook ironically where someone recommended downloading your DNA data from 23andMe etc. and uploading to this site, and they would do an analysis for free. The poster claimed he has been supplementing certain things per the recommendations and has never felt better....

I have not done this yet but was planning on digging into it. I am not vouching for the validity of any of this, just adding some more info for research/discussion - I'm certainly interested in finding out more about it as well.

I have a hard time believing the average person needs something like this to live healthier.

Usually things like these are ordered by people who are already so healthy that they're doing pretty much everything the testing is going to tell them, or they're splitting hairs on what needs to happen to be healthier. Or, it's be someone who is so out of shape and unhealthy already, that this kind of testing is the least of their worries.

Cancer screening is different. But I would actually run that by an oncologist or geneticist before just randomly getting a screening that may not actually screen for the specific mutations you need screened for.

This is more what I'm getting at.

I have heard that it cold be a good way to determine any imbalances based on genetic makeup. Some people may need more of a certain mineral/supplement than others. I think if it as a quick way to figure out how to optimize my well being (more energy, less inflammation, etc) without trying many other things or spending time in doctors offices.

I talked to my PCP about this after Gary Brecka went on Rogan. He said we can do a homocysteine test, and one or two others, and if the numbers are within range then methylated vitamins are likely a waste of money. I remember the homocysteine number being the one he wanted to see the most as it's considered to be a decent indicator of body inflammation.

I think most of the tests were covered by insurance and I was out of pocket maybe $100 all in.

Just be aware that the chances of doing nothing for you are very high. Gary Brecka is an excellent salesman- but he demonstrates a very poor understanding of physiology and pathology

I hope it works. And if it doesn't, then I hope it was cheap and side effect free

In general, I wouldn't recommend it. In my field (psychiatry), there has been interest in utilizing pharmacogenomic testing (e.g. GeneSight) in order to find out what drugs patients are most likely to respond to or have less side effects from. However, in it's current state it's almost useless from my perspective and the report doesn't change my management at all. While I'm hoping that it turns into something in the future, the science just isn't there yet.

From the bit of information you provided, there's many different things to figure out that may help instead of genetic testing. Do you strictly track how many calories you eat each day if you're trying to lose weight? Regarding energy levels, what is concerning to you about them? How many hours of sleep are you getting per night? If you're getting adequate hours of sleep and still feeling overly fatigued (not just "I'm not as energetic as I was when I was 21") you should talk to your PCP because there are many different medical conditions that can cause fatigue (sleep apnea, anemia, depression, anxiety, autoimmune conditions, medication side effects, etc.).
