My son is going to be a Freshman on Campus this Fall (WHOOP!) and is bringing his bicycle. What's the best type of lock to buy him for his bike? A wire one? The U Lock? Or something else? I figured there might be some cyclists on here that could answer it. Thanks!

How nice is the bike? Depending on that you'd probably want a kryptonite u-lock plus a cable lock to keep wheels from getting stolen.

U lock probably the best. As hbc said, if nice wheels, might need a chain as well. Unless he's cycling on weekends, I think a cheap garage sale bike might be the way to go. Don't care if it sits in the rain outside and gets a bit rusty. If it gets stolen, not as big of a loss. And campus isn't that big, and he won't be able to go that fast, that he needs a fancy bike. At least my thoughts.

Thank you all for the legit and also funny suggestions lol. I got him a chain lock from kryptonite with a combination, but more importantly I have decided to just get him a cheap crap bike for his first year and whenever he moves off campus, he can swap it out for his nicer bicycle that he can keep in his apartment. Between the threat of weather and potential theft, I think that would be a better decision. Thank you all for your help though!

Having my lock cut and Giant mountain bike stolen freshman year from commons - that's 100% the right move.

If it is a canyon Aeroroad in size M I will guard it for him and return it in a year.
