All things in moderation and stay active.

It's easier to demonize food choices and get sucked into nutritional tribalism than to work out 3-5x a week for a lifetime.

Watch TikToks on sugar? Yaaaaaas

Go be active? Nahhh

This is how most Americans think/act.

I don't remember anybody saying not to work out.

Yes, some posters said " just cut out sugar" and that is obviously a boiled down simplification. It is true, though, that if a lot of Americans cut out sugar, they would be 1 million times more healthy than they are.
TikkaShooter

Agree to disagree.

Those same Americans could keep their sugar but add exercise and be way healthier.

People place too much emphasis on magic fixes in their nutritional intake.

Doesn't matter if you're sedentary and deconditioned. As most folks are.

I am guessing we don't actually disagree on this, but I think the idea that a realistic amount of exercise that the average American could incorporate into their lives would be enough to overcome the detrimental effects of the amount of sugar and processed junk that the average American consumes.

Yes people are way more sedentary than they were a hunter's ago but they also eat way more of that junk than they did a hundred years ago.

And which parasites are these?
Craigy

There are three types of parasites that can cause diseases in humans.
  • Protozoa: Protozoa parasites are single-celled organisms. Protozoa can only multiply, or divide, within the host.
  • Helminths: These are worm parasites. They are typically visibleTrusted Source to the naked eye at their adult stage. Unlike protozoa, they cannot multiply in humans.
  • Ectoparasites: These live on rather than in their hosts. They include lice, fleas, and mosquitos.

Did you crib this from a junior high science textbook?

You're finding new and cringy ways of scaring people about sugar. It doesn't help at all.

Flour is just another unnecessary carb that people could do without. Common thought is that "cancer loves sugar", so folks probably just put 1 and 1 together.
Obviously, if you have cancer, then you are going to be making adjustments to what you put in your body to combat it. That does not mean the same as, sugar causes cancer. Never mind the sentiment being conveyed is that sugar is poisonous, which kind of implies any amount will kill you. Poisonous and causes cancer are two different things.

Pure white flour is fine. Problem is that all flour in the US is genetically tainted.

Respectfully… if I personally am reading a book about science that I think I understand that claims something as common as flour is 'genetically tainted', I'd just assume it's pseudoscience, put the book down and move on with my life.

We won't even go into the fact that flour isn't something that is planted or bred.

I don't think I've seen any posts saying sugar is healthy or that your body needs it to function optimally. The folks(you included) defending it seem to be arguing that it's not poison, though probably not great for you, and that a reasonably active person can tolerate it without incurring major side effects.

I used to think this way(see my post on pg 1) and thinking about the opportunity cost of the "sugar calories" in the maintenance calories equation was part of what helped me flip the switch in my head.

For example, say I need 2,000 calories to maintain my current state and 500 are from sugar. I'm pretty OCD about hitting protein goals and know I feel, and look, better when I consistently eat "clean" and hit the goal.

What amount of protein am I giving up I those 500 calories?

There is consuming to feel fine and be reasonably healthy. Then there is consuming to feel as good as you possibly can and try and optimize for health. I don't understand why anyone would choose option 1 if they have the knowledge and means to do option 2.

You have found a way of eating that works for you, and that's awesome. Your way of eating to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle means you limit sugar consumption.

I also have found a way of eating that works for me. My way entails eating highly variable amounts of sugar, which allows me incredible flexibility to structure my diet in a way that allows me to eat the foods I want. As long as I hit my calorie and protein goals, I freestyle everything else. And I love it

But our unique ways of eating may not work for a third person, who prefers to do it a different way than you and I do.

But it all WORKS provided:
- Calories are in check
- Protein is consistently highly
- You match your calorie intake with your energy expenditure
That's it. That makes up 95% of the whole equation. The other 5% are so minor that it's just not worth the extra effort to worry about it, as long as you're at the weight you want to be at and feel great and your metabolic bio markers are good

I never have an issue with someone saying they don't like sugar because they prefer to cut it out to eat healthy. My issue is people who loudly proclaim sugar is "poison" and offer zero context to support that argument. When pressed to explain why "sugar is poison", they point to some guru online who's convinced them that sugar is poison. And that "guru" very likely has their own very poor understanding of the science, or they're intentionally misleading you to make a profit off some product or service that they claim "is the only thing that works". In many cases, it's both issues

Fair enough. I drink alcohol and we could probably sub one for the other and have the same conversation.

I guess the difference is that I know alcohol is poison and drink anyway. You're still in denial about sugar.

I don't know what the point of saying this is. Because all it says to me is that you have a very poor understanding of biochemistry and physiology

I know that sugar in and of itself is not "poison". The burden of proof is on you to explain it

How is sugar a poison, biochemically speaking? I mean, if you are so sure this is the case, I assume you know enough about it to explain in your own words.

Wayyyy too many. Maybe 3-4 a week is good but I was well over that threshold. Once I took higher sugar content fruits out, my weight loss picked up again.

While fruits do have good stuff in them they are not the same produce we've had since forever. They have been cultivated over the past century to be larger, sweeter and consequently less nutritious.

I will say it is all still better for you than a Twinkie but I needed to be more mindful of eating some of these fruits more in moderation.

I love my sugar, exercise daily, and am stuck around 195 at 6'1". At 57 I just don't want to cut everything out but cutting down portions (pasta and bread mostly) and within a week I can drop 5lbs and feel great. Ideal goal for me is 185, but this thread is good motivation for me.

I read Wheat Belly a few years back and decided to cut out flour and beer for 30 days. I dropped 10 lbs without changing any other habits. Of course, I enjoy bread and beer and didn't stick with it. Still, it was fairly eye opening.

The dosage makes the poison. In small/limited reasonable amounts, it's totally fine. Hell, for those that train pretty hard, it is necessary at times to replenish glucose after training, again, in responsible, measured amounts. The issue with sugar is it tastes good. Not addictive (I do not buy int that either) but it just tastes so damn good. So, cutting it out more than less is a good idea. But, in small amounts, it's totally fine. White flour is fine too unless you're one of the small amounts of people in the population ACTUALLY have an intolerance to gluten. Most do not. Again, if I need 45=50 grams of carbs, it really doesn't matter if I eat white rice, white bread, whole wheat, oat bread or whatever. For the most part, If you get your 45-50 grams (if your macros in your diet calls for it), those are totally fine. I know it's anecdotal, buy I'm 10% BF and 190 and have a bagel and a whey protein shake after my training session, and sometimes before. My blood work is off the charts, and I have no issue maintaining, losing or gaining weight when I need or want to.

Funny how most "jacked" people do not follow weird diet fads and issues. Some do, but most will tell you to eat a balanced diet and not worry about a bunch of nutrition claims that science hasn't yet backed up....I learned how to eat from body builders when I was younger. I'd talk their ears off. This was back in the 80's and 90's as a young pup just learning how to train. Most of them would say to limit sugars, eat carbs (there's absolutely no substitute for carbs when it comes to training performance.) and a lot of healthy protein. It just works. But for anyone serious about their health on here ready to listen to all the BS out there, have you ever considered eating a balanced diet training hard and smart with weights first, combined with cardio you like to do (just walk really-go from 5K to 10K steps a day to 15K etc), sleeping more than 4 hours a night (6-10 hours is best) and watch the results. It's almost a panacea for great health.

But there is just so much unsubstantiated BS out there and so many people are so desperate to lose weight and be healthy, the BS headlines and narratives get eyeballs to click on them vs reality. Again, follow the evidence-based fitness community if you really want to filter out the charlatans lying to you to sell you crap or get attention. But look at all the BS out there about GMO's being bad for you when not one legit study shows any connection to health problems. Yet, the myths continue b/c people like to believe BS.
