As a 47 yr old male, I have not previously taken any sort of vitamin supplements. I was looking into what sort of vitamins I might try and take, and really don't have any idea on how to research or select. I would think a simple multi-vitamin would work, but the volume of selections available is overwhelming.

I do understand that vitamin intake should be crafted towards the unique person, but does this board have any advice or recommendations on where to start? I know of GNC of course, but are all vitamins made equal? Can i do just as good a job buying a low cost Amazon multi versus brand name? Or is it better to take specific vitamins instead of a multi?

I did a site search for past vitamin discussions but did not find a question/discussion like this one.

Be ready for lots of different opinions. I've tinkered around with 5-10 different brands and always come back to the one below. It's the best price/quality combo that I've found.

You can pay upwards of $75-100 a month for something like AG1, or any number of brands that promote methylated formulations of certain things(folate, b12, etc.), but I don't think it's necessary for 90% of people. Whatever you pick, make sure it's third party tested.

My initial thoughts as well. I am in no way any kind of health expert. I try to learn what I can, but there is admittedly endless amounts of information to wade through.

I have come to the belief that the body is a complex, integrated thing. So simply taking a multi-vitamin and seeking those listed benefits is complicated. Is your body even able to absorb nutrients that way it should be able to, or do you have any deficiencies in your gut and other organs that really won't even allow you to reap those benefits?

I do also believe that most stuff you can buy from your local drug store is probably crap. In one of the podcasts I listen to, they cited an investigation by the New York AG who came to find that "only 21 percent of the products actually had DNA from the the plants advertised on the labels." It identified Walmart with the poorest showing with only 4% of the products tested showing DNA from their plants listed on labels. Other similar findings were collected from GNC, Target, CVS and Walgreens.

I do also believe there are good products out there as well. Typically those will cost more, but I suppose not always. 3rd party tested, no fillers, nothing artificial are all things to look for in my opinion. Main point is that you need to do some research from a reputable place.

I am curious on some of the grass fed organ supplements that have been coming to market also; trying to look more into those for myself.

It's far cheaper to ask your butcher for heart or liver. Most of the supplements are $40+ per bottle.

This right here. Few ounces of liver a week is all you need for a good vitamin. Also, red meat is the most nutrient dense food you can have, so eat plenty of red meat too.

This is what I've been taking the past few months.

I like it a lot. Quickly cured some intestinal/gut issues I've been having for over a year. I've been on a multivitamin most of the time the last 20 years. This has been my favorite. Wife does AG1. I like that at well.

I never could get an answer from them on if it's third party tested. I, like many, tried it after Gary Brecka went on Rogan but didn't notice any notable changes so I went back to the cheaper one I've been taking.

Any idea on the testing?

Ended up adding this to our monthly subscription, so for $25 a month, seemed worth trying.

I like the sentiment of using our butcher, but there is obviously the inconvenience of needing to prepare and eat food. Maybe one day.

No idea. It's less expensive than AG1 and about the same as any multivitamin I get at the nutrition store, so I just roll with it.

Maybe I'm a turkey. Idk.. some times I just say "meh, I trust it" ain't got the time to research everything

You're supposed to take 6 capsules a day?

I saw the 180 count and thought that's a good deal, but then I realized that's a 30 day supply!

Yeah, I know. I am going to start at 3 per day and mix in with my current multi vitamin until it runs out. Then I will hop up to the 6. Half the price of the Heart and Soil stuff that gets pumped up a lot. Guess I will see if I notice anything and become a super human in the gym.

Keep us posted. I'm intrigued but my little daily old man pill holder can't hold an extra 6 pills a day, I'll have to upgrade to the big one. And at that point I'm going to feel like I need to shop around for retirement homes.

Before taking any supplements, it's a good idea to chat with a doctor and maybe have a blood test. But you can try to take Vitamin C, which is good for the immune system, Magnesium, and Zinc. Also, some time ago, I was reading something online and found out about mullein leaf extract and its' benefits to health. I'd never taken something like this before, but after finding out more information, I decided to try it. I ordered that mullein leaf extract after reading a lot of positive reviews. It's also totally organic, so I didn't see any cons. I used to have some breathing problems in the past, so I think such an extract will help me for sure.

I have been feeling good overall. Never really quite sure what impact a vitamin may be having but I plan to continue taking.
