Sled push

I'm currently training for a Hyrox race. Every time I do a sled push I feel like I'm totally destroying the arches and cushioning in my running shoes. Any tips on how to avoid that? Or is it just an expected casualty?

I wouldn't do sled pushes in a running shoe. Get a zero drop shoe for that kind of activity. You'll feel a lot more stable as well.

Hyrox is 8 x 1k runs with exercises (such as sled push / pull) after each. All timed, so no changing shoes as you go. And if I'm running 8k I'm wearing running shoes. Thus my dilemma.

What shoes do you have?

Brooks Glycerin. Love the cushion. I can run in Ghosts up to like 5k but beyond that there's just not enough cushion for these old legs.

Which escalates the issue. Sled push pretty much destroys all that cushion.

Ah, that is a bit of a conundrum.

I push/pull a sled @ least 2 times a week and use an exergenie to simulate a truck pull. I use the Asics Gel ventura trail runner. I've never had a blow out except on old shoes. I am very comfortable recommending these.

Lol going from a 10mm drop to a 0 drop is a recipe for an injury, especially how old the OP is (he is around my age so I am allowed to say that).

If I remember correctly the Glycerin are supposed to have super soft soles and probably don't provide much support with any lateral/radial loads. Trail running shoes typically have stiffer arch support which seems to be a better match for that type of event. I know when I have done some cross training or trail running type stuff in running shoes that I have to take it easy at times. Normally end up getting an arch cramp later that day as a result of my toes trying to grip my shoes to prevent my feet from sliding so much

Trail running shoes is a great idea. Comparable to normal running shows but with a tougher sole. Asics Gel-Kahanas have been my go to for years but they don't make them anymore unfortunately.

Fantastic suggestion. I actually ran in some Asics trail shoes a few years (decades?) back and loved them at the time. I may give that a go.

My coach is a Hyrox world champ in her age bracket. She uses trail running shoes. Thicker soles and much better traction.

If you are pushing on grass find a pair of cleats on sale. There are some good prices on baseball cleats this time of year.

Cleats would be hell running for any distances. Once again the Asics gel.

Asics have the same drop of the Brooks and in my experience a similar fit. I would try them out and if they fit roll with that. Hoose tends to be spot on with anything that involves moving weight.

8km with cleats would tear you up as well. Unless the OP plans on doing Crossfit type workouts a trail running shoe is the most versatile and less expensive

Train in a zero drop and use your running shoes in the race.

You need traction for this and it's almost always on artificial turf and the open weights are pretty heavy. The shoulder In technique with your arms on the vertical posts works best for most.
