I'm going to be doing a half IM in a couple of weeks and was hoping to have some veterans weigh in on their regimens for race day nutrition and (for men) tri kit versus changing into and out of biking shorts.
Backdrop:
I'm old. I've done one Sprint and one Olympic in the past. I abhor running. I have never run a half marathon in my life. I do plenty of biking. It looks to be really hot and humid for the race (Augusta in 2 1/2 weeks).
I don't care about my overall time and my transition times, other than that I need to avoid a DNF.
My normal routine is to eat a small breakfast with a banana in the morning of an event (tri or 5K or decent bike). I usually have a Stinger waffle right before the swim, and I use two bottles filled with water and Skratch for rides of this length. I might also take a GU gel and have it on a 56-mile bike ride. I've never run more than a 10K (see: I abhor running), so all I usually take with me on a run is a handheld water bottle and maybe one GU gel. For any run of less than about 4 miles, I just drink water before and after.
There should be plenty of water along the run route.
I am curious as to what others take with them on the bike, and during the run. Also, do guys typically change into biking shorts then running shorts, or do the whole event in a tri kit? Fresh socks, at least, for the run?
Thanks in advance, hoping not to bonk.
