How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hey guys, I'm going to be moving to College Station soon and I'm looking for a gym to join. Unfortunately I'm not a student so I can't use the rec center.

I'm looking for something that has a pool and some good spinning classes. Or maybe even a crossfit type gym would be ok as well. I find that I work out a lot better with small groups. Any recommendations??

Thanks!

Golds Gym has the best spin (RPM) classes in the area as well as numerous other group fit options. No pool though. I recommend checking out Golds out when you get to town.

you'd think BCS is primed for a YMCA or something very soon...

We have some pretty amazing cycling class at Aggieland Fitness Dome. No pool though.

The only gyms with a pool in the area besides The Rec are two of the Aerofit locations. There is a crossfit gym in Bryan (Body Lab) and Golds is the better gym in the area if you want better equipment with a good price. The Dome is nice inside, but it is really expensive and they don't give any sort of price breaks. With Golds and Aerofit you can usually talk down a deal of some sort (if you can't score a cheap membership through your work).

A YMCA like the one in the Woodlands with the outdoor kids pool/splashpad/waterpark would get our money for family fitness time, but right now the only gym that fits my needs is Golds. I would love to see a powerlifting gym open up, but I seriously doubt there are enough serious lifters in the area to support it.

I was thinking about either renting an air conditioned storage space or renting some old building like the one across the Chicken Oil on Old College with weightlifters painted on it, would probably need a few guys to make it happen.

I think that building next to the moose is still used by Blinn for some classes.

If you had a gym setup that had good powerlifting gear available, like Texas Power Bars, yoke bars, cambered bars, reverse hyper, etc then I'd be interested. The metal buildings out on SH30 might be a good choice too.

Keyed access for members would be nice, since I'm typically in the gym at 5am due to my schedule and commitments, but having group workout times with a schedule would be neat too. Like some of what Westside and SuperTraining does.

Some strongman competitors operate out of storage units, Travis Ortameyer does in Spring, for example.

Recently I was speaking with another person who is in the local (B/CS) fitness industry who was kicking around the idea of opening a gym along a similar idea. If the gym was run like a club, where members are responsible for contributing to the gym (keeping things picked up, in working order, clean, etc) it might have a chance where a full on commercial gym may not.

I do Olympic lifting so I have two Oly bars (Pendlay and Eleiko), +300kg worth of bumper plates, competition collars, jerk blocks, 8x8 lifting platform, squat stands, and a ProMaxima GHD. Two belts and a dip belt that I do not use anymore.

It would have to be run like a club and with good people, I spent too much money on this setup and I am too old to worry about it being stolen and ****.

That's the hard part. Watching people at the various gyms I've been a member of over the years is the giveaway that people simply do not care about the equipment. They don't get it that their actions have consequences and when they break something it may not get repaired. That's why the CS Golds doesn't have 150lbs dumbbells anymore, corporate got tired of buying new ones since people who weren't strong enough to use them would drop them instead of sitting back up with them.

The biggest question would be are there enough hard-core lifters in the area to support something like this? Also, are there enough lifters who are willing to be a member of a lifting club who won't abuse the equipment?

Honestly, I'm not sure. I think there are enough people, but there may not be enough people who won't tear stuff up.

A while back I learned that the reason why it is sometimes hard to find spring clips for bars at Golds is because people steal them. Seriously, who steals a spring clip for an olympic bar from a gym? What is the use, what is the point besides to be a jerk?

aldes, Aerofit has two locations with pools. One outdoor and the other has an indoor pool. the spinning classes are good at both clubs. Rates start at $29/month FYI. You can request a 3 day free pass to try it out and make sure it works for you. Good luck with your search. You can see their locations on their website.
