GM Getting Rid of Dipsticks for V8 Trucks

For the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, General Motors is replacing the traditional under-hood oil check with a digital gauge, but only on trucks equipped with the automaker's newest V8 engines.

So instead of a simple, proven way of checking the oil, you will now be using an electrical system that will require a visit to the dealership when there are issues.

Engineering is now being done by the accountants.

Such a stupid idea. I have a few cars with no oil or transmission fluid dipsticks. It's a big pain in the ass to deal with since you can't check oil level until the engine is warm. I have a BMW that makes you sit in neutral for a few minutes to check the level eve once it's warm.

Anything to save that $.05 in cost per vehicle.

I don't think it's to save money - I think it's to make money.

Dip sticks don't break or have wiring issues that only a dealership can fix.

Probably got tired of trying to find a route for the dipstick with all the wires, hoses, different fuel rails for the port and direct fuel injection, and exhaust manifolds

Reassuring, considering Ford didn't know whether their 2.7 took 6 or 7 quarts of oil. 3 iterations of dipsticks later and they just said "eh, close enough."

There is no way this is cheaper than a dipstick

Im cynical so lots of reasons a carmaker might do this but the one that comes to mind is for data collection. When john doe comes in with a warranty issue and they can dig into the data and see the oil was below spec last week, it's easier to deny a claim.

But i can also see a lot of good for it like being able to keep issues from being issues.

I meant an extra $.05 to install a dipstick along with the computer monitors.

Pretty soon the hood will just be bolted closed.

At least this will track oil consumption making the warranty process easier.

I'm surprised no Tesla fan boys have shown up to gloat.

I had a 2009 BMW X5 that had the electronic oil level check but there was still a physical dipstick.

In my 2014 BMW 7 Series, there is no physical dipstick and it drives me crazy having to trust the system to tell me everything is OK when I used to be able to make that decision myself.

For trucks, I wonder if the competitors will follow suit.

With Fords, the dipstick is usually behind the wheel.

I have a 911 with a digital dipstick. Its far from optimal. It takes the engine running a bit before it will register. Far from a modern car though. And my Boxster the same year has a dipstick. Go figure.

Of course this is it. The more they get you into the dealership; the more they can find wrong to charge you to fix.

Won't be long before independent auto shops are extinct.

This is because GM v8 engines have been failing at higher rates for a while now, and they need more data to determine why as their own engineers can't figure it out.

They will also provide convenient log data that can be used to deny warranty claims due to supposed lack of oil changes.

Watch for GM in the future to remove the oil cap and all other fluid caps. You'll be forced to bring in the vehicle because only they can replace and add fluids. This is future for sure. Glad I listened to the wife and kept my aunts car. Nothing fancy, only thing with power is the steering. That's ok, these new cars regardless of brand are trash. Overloaded computers on wheels that break way to easily.
