Found a very nice 1962 Ford Fairlane 500 with 260 V8 and 2-speed Ford-O-Matic...with working A/C. I've got a 1970 VW, which is plenty analog, that is a project. This Ford is pristine and such a joy to drive. I haven't had this much fun since owning a convertible Ford 8N.

160hp with a two speed transmission doesn't sound like a joy to drive to me, but I support cool old cars

Very true. But it's crazy how fast all cars are now. Kind of ridiculous.

1969 Mustang Mach 1 did 0-60 in 5.5 seconds. A 2026 Hyundai Elantra does it in 5.0…

Guessing you can time 0-60 with a calendar but that's a cool ride. Need some pics when you can.

You seem aggravated. Can you point out the exact part of your vagina that was inflamed by my post?

True.

What's also true is that the Mach 1 will still drop panties in 50 years and the Elantra will still be ghey.

No, nothing like that, friend. I just can't imagine someone thinking it wouldn't be fun to drive. I guess I'm not the type who has to attempt a new land speed record every time I cruise into town. Plus it's been too long since I said "gaywad".

Cars used to be parts of an "experience". Nowadays, cars are just a bunch of specs on a sheet to get a job done.

My 77 F250 has a big ass V8 that probably squeaks out 200-220 horsepower. But it's fun to drive. It has no fancy electronics. It has a speedometer, a couple gauges, maybe a few idiot lights and an AM radio.

But it is very much fun to drive. It gets more attention, even with faded paint and rust than anything new.

My 6.7 F350 HO will run circles around just about any muscle car of 1970, but it ain't getting any thumbs up.

Awesome! I have 2 mostly analogs….1995 F250 with 7.3 and a 1991 NSX. The F250 is easily the slowest vehicle I have owned, but one of the most fun to drive.

As far as zero to 60 times go, it is very relative to the overall experience. My '25 Mustang GT is a 4 second car and my '91 NSX is a 5 second car… but the NSX just feels faster. When the vtec kicks in at 6000 RPM, there is no feeling like it.

Also, my 6.2L Sierra Denali is somewhere in the mid 5s and just doesn't feel fast.

Well...a few things to work on this weekend. I filled the 16 gal (15.82 to be precise) tank and drove it to work for a week. Had some old guy in a Hybrid Prius pull into the parking garage behind me just to take car pics and regale me with his old car stories. I looked at the Prius and felt a bit of sympathy for him. Many thumbs up and nice comments so far. Definitely a coffee and cars rig.

Anyway, it starts right up and goes. In fact, I think it would do the entire 110mph on the speedo but, we won't be doing any of that funny business. This girl is for cruising and that Ford-o-Matic 2-spd was built for 50-55mph.

So...

  • She runs rich...very rich (Carb adjustments)
  • Dial in the timing (Points)
  • New set of plugs
Why? I've been putting around town in this girl and she gets 6.9 mpg. That is freaking disgusting...lol. Prius guy looking quite smart after the fact. I think the only time I've received worse fuel mileage was driving a 1978 Chevy Square Body with 454ci, leaky valve stems, and regularly fouled plugs. So, we're going to get this rich beech leaned out and timed properly...for starters. May put a PerTronix ignition unit on it at some point. The PerTronix units worked well on the Ford 8N and '69 F100.

Should I start a little 302 build...just in case the 260 doesn't hold up? I think the 2-spd is more suspect to failure but, if that goes, I'll either T5 or C-4 as a replacement.

Yep. Reminds me of the scene in Indiana Jones of the prince lusting over a German automobile that can go from 0 to 60 mph in 12.5 seconds... lmao.

Great find. My grandfather had one of these but it was a teal/turquoise color and had a manual column shift. Cool cars for sure. Wish we had kept it in the family.

This. And cars used to have their own individual styling. There was no doubt when you looked at a 67 GTO, 67 Mustang, 67 Chevelle etc what car you were looking at.
And the colors available…..wow. Remember two tone paint jobs?
Honestly nowadays, for the most part I can't tell one brand or model from another unless it's a Charger or Mustang or Vet. And colors are either white, grey, black, or white, grey and black.
Very boring, no individuality at all.
I feel sorry for the kids of today. There is still nothing like the rumble of a big block with glass packs of the 60's and early 70's.
Nowadays if a kid puts performance exhaust on his 6 banger it sounds like a Stihl Chainsaw.

The thrill comes from power in relation to brakes, tires and steering. A motor with under 200 horsepower can still be quite exciting if you have drum brakes, skinny tires, the steering of a river barge and no seatbelt.

On the other hand, I've driven more modern sports cars with 400+ horsepower with great brakes, tight steering, fat tires and all the safety equipment that feel pretty ordinary until you really push them.

When the EMP goes off, you'll be cruising around while all the modern cars are bricked because their fragile electronics got fried.

If you're thinking 302, just bite the bullet and go 351W with a C4 transmission.
