Back window exploded - 2018 silverado

This weekend I turned on the rear defrost and after about 2-3 minutes smoke started pluming up from behind the rear seat and filled up the cab. As soon as I dropped the windows to clear the smoke 1/2 of the rear window shattered.

Anyone else ever experience this?

Pertinent information:

GM chose not to issue a formal safety recall through the NHTSA. Instead, they released Customer Satisfaction Program N192265660. Under this bulletin, if a vehicle shows signs of heat damage or if the window has already shattered due to the defroster, dealers are instructed to replace the entire rear window assembly at no charge

That's insane. Never heard of that.

Craziness of that electrical/heating element failure aside… why in the world would you ever need your defroster on this weekend?

99.99% of the time I wouldnt but it had some condensation and I was about to back a boat down the ramp and I'm a turn around kinda guy and not a side window.

The glass in my 4runner did that years ago. I got it replaced and then later Toyota issued a recall/replacement notice…and the *^%#^'s wouldn't reimburse me!

When the glass shattered, it scared the crap out of me! I wondered if I was being shot at.
