We drove my wife's '21 Palisade with 95k miles from Houston up to Palo Duro Canyon last week and the car started going into limp-mode and threw a P0087 code for low pressure on the fuel rail, P21A0 for cylinder 5 A/F ratio imbalance, and P219E for cylinder 3 A/F ratio imbalance.

We drove it directly to the dealership in Amarillo since it's still under the extended warranty and they diagnosed that it needs all new injectors, new spark plugs and a new fuel rail to the tune of $3700. And of course Hyundai is not wanting to cover it under the extended warranty because of "carbon buildup" on the injectors. I'm calling BS on that and I'm going to call to the dealership tomorrow to see if I can find out how exactly they came to this diagnosis, but, assuming I can't get it covered under warranty, I'm going to need a good independent shop to do the repairs because I'm not paying dealership prices. Also, we rented a car and drove back to Houston when they told us it might be another week before we got a diagnosis, so there's an added layer to the PITA this has become.

Any recommendations for a good Indy shop in the Amarillo/Canyon area?

In the manual for the car does it show in their maintenance schedule at what frequency you should have their injector cleaning service done?

so many dealers are pushing this crap now. And they'll tell you that running fuel cleaner isn't enough. And what you're running into is my fear for anything under warranty....they'll find anything to decline it and almost force you to buy their overpriced services on a semi regular basis.

I talked to the service advisor this morning. He said he argued that the warranty should cover the repair but Hyundai wasn't having it. Whether or not that's genuine or just deflection, I don't know. The technician is in training until Friday but the service advisor did say I can definitely talk to the technician when he gets back and have all his notes if I want to challenge the warranty rejection myself, so the dealership is being helpful so far.

The technician observed carbon buildup on the injectors, but I want to know if he performed a leak-down test or an injector balance test and what those results were. I also want to know the link between carbon buildup on the injectors and low fuel rail pressure (P0087) and how they know carbon buildup is the root cause of the problem and not just present or even a symptom.

Not sure when the switch happened (I want to say MY 2022) but Kia/Hyundai went to MPI+DPI. Prior generation was only DPI and would have a lot of injector/carbon buildup issues. Good fuel/additives don't matter if no fuel is getting sprayed over the top of the valves, which is why they push the service so hard.

This is why I will never entertain an extended warranty. Best of luck

The valves aren't the problem. The problem is (supposedly) with carbon in the injector nozzles which, of course, would be constantly washed by the gasoline and could benefit from fuel detergents and fuel system cleaners.

The extended warranty has more than paid for itself. I've had the self-leveling rear shocks replaced twice, a service that would have been over $1500 each time if I was paying the dealer out of pocket. It was a bit of a hassle, but the warranty did cover them.

Yep, intentionally planned obsolescence. A five year old Hyundai with 100k miles. Time to upgrade ya loyal customer! Look at all these great 26' models we have available!

There are so many dealerships out there that if you didn't purchase your vehicle from them, will piss down your back and tell you its' raining. Also, the dealerships that offer extended warranties where the maintenance is done exclusively by them. Even going to another dealer for an oil change will void the warranty. It's vehicular extortion.

it's almost as bad as home warranties. sounds great in principle, but you end up putting up a fight to get things covered. but at the end of the day, they are concerned with $$$, not actually benefitting the consumer
