Holy crap. This thing is nuts. Unless I win the lottery or win a raffle, I will never get one. But super interesting combination of technology, power, and awesomeness. I might try and see if I can rent one some time.

One of the better orange paints I have seen in a while, but will need to see it in person. Kind of like Competition Orange on the Boss 302; should have bought one of those new.

Fastest production car ever made. If you have disposable income and just want to go really, really, REALLY fast, this is a no-brainer over anything Ferrari or Lamborghini are producing today and like less than half the cost.

296GTB's 1yr old with 1000 miles are going for <$300k....and you have a Ferrari in the garage, not an overpriced Chevy.

You have a high strung, unreliable vehicle for which any kind of maintenance, repairs and parts will be insanely expensive. Further, its not like there are garages or dealers qualified to do the work on every corner, or even every town.

The Chevy, meanwhile, will be far less expensive to maintain and repairs can be made at any Chevy dealership. Absolutely every aspect of Corvette ownership is simpler and a superior value compared to those high strung Italian go karts.

Modern Ferrari's are very reliable since the 360 (1999+). Yes parts are ridiculous (unless you have an "older" one and know where to find cross over replacements ) . So is service. The guy I use (d) rates have gone from $170 to $248 per hr in the last 4 years. I'm going back to doing most of it myself.

Also, Vette, as you pointed out, is still a chevy.

$248 is really high. I pay $200/hr for my P-cars. Do a lot myself also.

yeah, my last annual service was almost double what I first paid in 10 years ago. When the WalMart Mobile 1 deal was posted last week I grabbed a bunch and will be DIY my annuals from now on. Filters, drain plug and washers are $50 online and I have the filter cap tool.

Timing belts are due this year and there is a bunch of DIY videos online and it's not hard, just need a few special tools so that will be DIY this fall as well.

You got me thinking so I did a little google. Quarter mile time of 996 turbo is generally 12.4-12.6, that's on par with my truck when it's N/A.

Well, its AWD and can spin all 4 tires in 2nd gear. Maybe a stock turbo. Not mine. I'll take your truck in the 1/4 mile any day.

And you have a truck.

Dang, the Toyota off road shop I took my LX570 to recently was $200/hr. I left without getting the repair done.

$200/hr is pretty normal for an indy shop for Euro cars. I am fortunate to have a really good relationship with my mechanic. I can call with isssues I encounter with my own work. I have given him a ton of $ with engine out work on the 996 Turbo (pinning coolant lines, etc.). That builds goodwill.

Let's just say it has made thousands of $ in the 1/4 mile. I have since removed the single mass flywheel clutch, and tuned it down. It was an assassin, but the stock clutch is much quieter.

You are preaching to the choir. I am a frequent flier at Pelican Parts, the Euro parts store. By example, I had a coolant leak on the 911. The crush washer was $1.50. The tool to vacuum coolant into the car was $80. I have an air oil separator on the way for my Boxster.

People getting in a pissing match between a 996 and a pick-up truck. Comical.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

Been a long day for me. I apologize if I came across poorly. I much prefer to discuss maintenance. Sometimes things go well. Sometimes I have to call my mechanic for advice.

But a 996 and 996 TT have totally different engine galleries. I could go on and and bore everyone. The base 996 suffers from potential IMS bearing failures. The turbo sufffers from potential coolant line failures. Both are solvable. I digress. Most tracks won't allow you to race a turbo unless the coolant lines have been pinned.

Those are cool cars. I just have no clue about the maintenance regime and cost on a Ferrari. Guess I could inquire.

Wasn't really directed toward you. 996 is one of my favorite cars. Think its funny someone in a pick-up is trying to run smack at a Porsche.

I try to be a good ambasador for Porsche. Probably didn't succeed today. I remember the commercial when the kid went to the Porsche dealer and was treated kindly. Got to sit in the 911. Porsche isn't that today. But I still think it should be. Would like to change that.

Oil 1x per year, add brake fluid, coolant and gearbox oil every 2nd year, timing belts every 5. And this one has an access panel so no dropping the engine nonsense like some early Ferrari's. Gearbox oil is kinda a PITA bc you have to drop the diffuser and take off the bumper to get to it. Rest of the fluids are pretty easy (like any other car).

Timing belts can be a lock and swap with new bearings or if you want pull the cam covers and check the valve timing. The timing belts used to say Dayco on them and were $30/ea. Now they say Ferrari and are $130/ea !!

i did install new Tubi headers and did a Challenge Stradale ECU tune along with new MAF sensors. Put new PS2's on it 8 years ago and they only have 8,000 miles and are due bc of age.
