Run Flat tire options

Wife's car is coming up again for tires. Last time, I just replaced with the OEM tires. Bridgestone Potenza. Car is a Q60 red sport rear wheel drive. HAs lots of power but she doesn't drive it hard at all. Mostly just a commuter for her 5 mile drive to work and the occasional road trip with just us. Guess I am wondering if there are better mileage/ride comfort options since pure performance is not that important. From what I can tell the Bridgestone's are middle of the road. Haven't been terribly unhappy with them or anything, just wondering if there is a better choice.

Yes, I have tried to talk her into regular tires. For some reason she is adamant that she wants the run flats and its not a battle that is worth having to me.

Main reason for asking here is that when you search discount tire online or other sites it is really hard to narrow down to run flats for some reason. Called Discount and they talked through various brand options, but I like to look and research things. Quick google searches take me to discount or tire rack and no joy or manufacturer sites.

You don't wanna hear it, but get her the regular tires and a AAA membership. In my experience, run-flats are harsher and noisier, and as you mentioned, the options are limited.

Have AAA have tried multiple time with logic and performance and financial arguments. She says ( to me and to your response). Thank you for your opinion. It was not helpful

Some things aren't worth the fight in a happy marriage. Her tires last two years.

I tried logic that I switched my runflats and drive 3 or 4 times more and have never had an issue. I have no clue why she decided to dig her heels in on this. Don't really care.

Just trying to figure out if the Bridgestones are my best choice. Proving is all pretty similar except for the Michelins

As one of my bosses once told me, "You are misusing logic and reason."

This board decided a long time ago to replace run flats with normal tires due to the exact issues that you are describing. I followed this board's advice when I replaced BMW run flats with high quality tires. I never had a flat in the new tires (also never had a flat in the run flats). Ride improved dramatically and costs dropped.

Your spouse is not motivated by logic and reason and this board won't be much help.

Any tire is a run flat if you are determined enough.

If you want to try to keep fighting the battle, ask her when is the last time she or any of her friends were stranded by a flat tire. When did she last see someone on the side of the road fixing a flat? When did she last see anyone even putting air in their tires? When was the last time she was out of cell phone range?

Ok, logic and reason are off the table, so just buy whatever run-flats the shop has in stock and be done with it. I'm biased towards Michelin, but I'm not certain theirs were any better. You both know the lifespan and ride quality will be subpar, but that's the choice you made.

Does Bridgestone offer a driveguard in that size?

Good suggestion - different from the other run flats but they sound like an improvement.

And she can still feel confident that she has a "backup"

That was kind of the point of the post. Since I haven't found a list that is can compare options.

I'll look

Will still have the conversation again with her and try to win. In the end , not going to lie to her or make that big of a deal about it.

I understand if you don't want to fight the fight.

I wonder if there is some way to let her drive a car with and without the tires?

Or maybe just wave the white flag and only take your vehicle on trips.

This is insane that she doesn't want to be inconvenienced in the off chance she gets a flat on a 5 mile commute.

The bigger question is which one of her friends, coworkers, or relatives put the bug in her ear via Facebook post, third hand story or fear mongering about instant death via a flat tire leading to a red ribbon tied to the door handle and tape on the hotel mirror.

She's all about the "run-flats" for a particular reason. Please don't get offended, but you seem very laid-back with the wife (non-confrontational) and it's likely she either has some fear that's propelling this OR she simply doesn't have all the facts because they've never been properly explained/provided via the laid-back confrontation.

Fully suggest you find a way to explain that what she wants isn't common for a reason and generally intended more for industrial / towing trailers and other reasons.

They're WAY more expensive, they last half as long (at best), and they really ruin the "ride" (smoothness, bumps, handling, etc) of the vehicle you paid so very much for.

Typically people that want "run flats" think of it as a simple upgrade to a cheaper tire that doesn't have that. That is NOT the case, as explained above with facts.

i have a better idea. if she wants the run flats, let her do the work to find them and replace them with whatever she wants to put on

Have you ever seen the movie Inception? Once an idea gets into a woman's mind (usually by an instagram influencer), you cannot remove it.

Kudos to your wife.

I guarantee you my wife couldn't name 2 tire brands and sure as crap has never heard the term 'run flat'.

But...my wife has learned when she comes into the garage, and me and my son are working on his car and dont immediately say 'hello'....turn around and leave, and check in later; because things aren't going well at the moment

She is definitely not the influence by social media type. She is smart and pretty laid back too. She is not the freak out type at all.

What is weird is that she had a little bmw ten years ago that we switched out of run flats and she saw and understood firsthand how much better it rode. Never had an issue occur from it.

She would happily take care of it by just replacing them like last time with oem. I will say that of the runflats I have driven on, these seem pretty decent.

I haven't been able to figure out the reluctance from her in this case. Will have another discussion about it before replacing and see if she will relent. If not, not that big of a deal. I don't drive it all that much and with her driving habits we car getting 18 to 24 months out of these. So not terrible.

My point in posting wasn't really to psychoanalysis her, just to better understand the runflat options out there.

We know. And nobody here is truly trying to do that.

It's just very hard for most of us to respond without explaining why you really should change from going the 'run flat route".

It's hard to give good, honest advice without doing THAT (talking about why Run-Flats are not ideal).

.... it's basically like we don't feel like we're doing you any favors by NOT mentioning it should be overcome.

Gigem' and good luck.

I get it. No Worries,

In my original post, I expressed my thoughts on RF tires. I hate them too. The point was really to get the list and thoughts on the best choice among these crappy tires, since I have had a really hard time finding any good source to research them at the places I normally go to research tires.

After we solve this one we can work together to figure out which sandpaper grit is best for toilet paper.

My smiley face didn't go on there for some reason. We're having fun though.

I have Pirelli Cinturato P7 AS on my vehicle and they aren't terrible. I'll probably be moving to a non run-flat once I run these down, but I honestly have to say I expected worse. I'm fairly picky about ride quality and don't have much trouble with them. I am told they wear quickly, especially if you drive aggressively.

That said, I also drive about 3 miles a day. So...

It means that a post about tires isn't really the place for your porn fantasy

It also means that people who mainly post on the Premium Board are often weird, inappropriate, or condescending when they descend from Premium to bless the common people with their presence

Gotcha. It's CLEARLY a joke response to the guy that before me in this thread made a comment about debating about toilet paper... so I made a over-the-top joke (that has nothing to do with 'fantasies')

So apparently you didn't have a joke that went over my head, and instead mine went far over yours.

Relax.

The worst part of run-flats in my experience is they can't be repaired.

Living around construction, I've had tons of punctures from roofing nails and screws.

Almost all have been fixable with a plug and air in my garage. But not the runflat. It means new tire.

Given we are past logic, I know this is not helpful to your situation. Just wanted to vent.
