Why is My Kid's Fan Belt Shredding?

My kid's 2012 VW Tiguan just shredded its second fan belt in the past 12 months.

The belts last for several months without any visible wear then just shred.

There are no obvious pulleys out of alignment or things rubbing the belt.

The car is across the country from me so I don't have eyes-on the problem.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Extra info:
January 2024-Alternator removed during water pump replacement. Belt removed and reused as it had no obvious wear.

February 2024-Car driven from Texas to Virginia

May 2024-Fan belt shredded and replaced.

Early June 2024-Car driven from Virginia to Texas to California and started back.

Late June 2024-Hydroplaned into a fence. Insurance had car repaired (poorly) at shop in a small town in Montana. No engine damage noted.

July 2024-Car made it back to Virginia. No more problems until today.

I can't say for certain that this is the case, but I had this happen to me three times many years ago. It ended up being that a bolt broke off holding the power steering pump. It was causing just enough vibration to cause the belt to come off and shred into the fan.

I'd double-check pulley alignment and then check that the belt is properly tensioned. Then I'd watch it while someone else gets the engine up to different RPMs and see if there's any movement or deflection in the belt.

What motor? 2.5?

If so its probably the harmonic balancer. It's a known issue at high rpm. Does your kid like to wind it out on a regular basis?

OEM belt? Knockoff no name brand from China?

When possible I would check that all the pulleys are tightly bolted including any tensioner pulleys. If that checks out, then I would suspect a pulley could be either damaged or out of alignment. Also, make sure this is an OEM belt as was already suggested.

Just guessing but I would expect the belt to be the only one available at the autozone that was within walking distance of the dead car.

So probably not OEM.

Had a CRV chewed 3 belts same year. Ended up being 1 yr old after market power steering pump pulley shaft movement.
