So I get a notice from Harris county toll road authority stating I owe some cash. Problem is I haven't been through Harris county in nearly 6 years. This is from 11/9/24. Also saying I have 10 tolls to date. Is this legit or a scam?

TX Tag was recently taken over by HCTRA, so is it possible that your tolls were elsewhere in Texas and now are being handled by HCTRA?

It's wild they transferred <40% of all txtag accounts. I had ~$80 and 7 toll tags on my account that didn't get transferred.

NTTA was significantly easier to work with than Txtag or HCTRA and they had free tags so I moved everything over there.

I've yet to put transponders on 2 of my cars and have had 0 issues with discounted billing in the last year on NTTA compared to txtag. I'd get pay by mail invoices ~70% of the time even with a working txtag on the car.

Great change for the Austin area.

It's a scam, don't pay it. I got hit with the same thing from NTTA but when I looked at my account online and called them, they said I don't owe anything.
A few days later on facebook, I saw that a group is trying to scam people this way.

Did you sell a car and not remove the plates?

I got pulled over for unpaid tolls. Listed for a different license plate. Total dumbasses running the toll roads.

How do you login? I had an EZTag and my wife had a TX Tag, and when I got a new car, I just got a Texas tag through her account so we could keep things on 1 account, and when I try to log into HCTRA, her login info doesn't work. My old info is there but it has my old inactive tags from old cars.

How'd you get notified? If text, as StockHorseAg said, it's a scam.

I forgot how I did it. I think there's a way to make a new account or migrate using your TxTag info.

You should have received an email with the details on how to create your new account.

It's under my wife's account, so who the eff knows with her. She has like 1,389 unread emails, so I'm assuming it's in there somewhere.

My TXTag account was set up with a sort of "auto-pay". I put $20 on the account, and when the balance drops below $5, it's authorized to charge another $20. Been doing this for 10+ years.

This setting did migrate over to the new HCTRA accounts, but HCTRA is sending me emails that say I have a balance. At first glance, I thought I owed money, but that's not the case. The $20 balance and auto-charge is covering my charges. But the emails HCTRA is sending are kind of confusing (mainly because it's just different from what TXTag sent).

I live in Central Texas, so I do not frequently hit toll roads. However, I did want a toll tag. Since I use the one in Austin most frequently, I tried to get a TxTag, I had previously set up an account to pay for tolls as I racked them up. When I tried to login, I couldn't, I also could never reset my password.

Since it doesn't matter which type tag you have in Texas, I looked at Houston's tags. They wanted to charge for the tag. That pushed me to NTTA. Free tag and I have not had any issues with them.

Watching the video above, Houston's tag is striving for 99% accuracy? The last time I was in Houston on a toll road, in the middle of the day, there were more than 100 people passing each toll point per minute. Assuming 100 have tags, that is 1 person per minute per direction of travel at each of the toll points. That's a lot of issues.

First thought would be the "issues" are likely all with whatever AI/license plate readers they're using to manage pay by mail and maybe trailer axel counts.

I don't use it extensively, but the only issue I've ever had (always had a tag) was moving it to a new truck back in the day and they recorded my new plate incorrectly when I called to change it (before you could do it online).

The fact they couldn't merge the TxTag accounts with the HCTRA accounts that share an email address is ridiculous. Right now I have balances on both accounts, but only one account is active.

I set my HCTRA account up recently. If I remember the procedure you go to the page on the HCTRA website regarding the takeover/merger with TxTag and enter either your account number or tag number. It will send an email to the address on file with TxTag with instructions to verify your new account. It was actually pretty easy for me, but I didn't have the issue of already being a HCTRA customer.

Same here. I put off setting up my account for a while, thinking it was going to be a pain, but it was relatively easy and the HCTRA website is better than the TXTag one IMO.

TxTag and HCTRA had a huge software issue, double billing people etc. you likely don't owe anything.

Same for us except they didn't actually transfer ours and TxTag won't give us our account history just "you owe us $X" and nothing more. Then HCTA sent us a bill as well but no account there . Wtf

This isn't entirely true. The ntta tag is the only one that works at DFW airport, and the HCTRA tag IS the only one that works at IAH
