Selling an older car

How long do you want to ignore this user?
My wife has a 2011 Highlander which is in good condition, drives fine. I want to get my wife a Mercedes SUV, likely 2024, very lightly used.

The question is how do I dispose of the Highlander for the best possible price? It's been 10 years since I sold my last car on craigslist. I am looking to get the best possible price for this car.

Other question is, I want to have the same car license plate number transferred to my new car. So this means my Highlander will have no plates until I sell it. What are the legal implications of that? I don't plan on driving it around, just keep it for sale.

Any tips, suggestions, ideas are welcome as it's been about 10 years since I did this last.

PS: I don't live in Texas.

Don't negate the trade in value that reduces your taxable amount for the new vehicle. Make sure you run it both ways. Most dealerships will match any of these offers to make a deal unless it's outrageous.

You'll need to sell it privately to get the maximum price. No question there. You are able to keep the plates off of that car. They belong to you. Not sure if the tax office will let you put them on the new car. The buyer of your Highlander can drive for a short while with no plate if he has a bill of sale.

Post it here or email me as my daughter is looking for a replacement after wrecking her car 2 weeks ago.

You can keep the plates and the buyer will get temp plates

I know you're still working out the price question, but can you share any more details on the Highlander's condition and mileage? Thanks

Sell your car in texags. A car like this will go fast and you'll avoid the crazy people scams on Craigslist. Go to carmax and Carvana to get a quote for what they would pay. Mark that up some and list it here. This will be better than any car dealership trade in value you'll get.

I am too far away from Texas though...

But good idea, I will get quotes from Carmax and Carvana!

I would take the offers from carvana/carmax (consider that the minimum). Find out what dealerships and carvana are listing the car at (consider that the maximum). True value is probably around the middle. Maybe slight under that.

You can do that online by the way. No need to go into a physical location for a valid quote. They will look it over once you do bring it in to sell.

I have sold a number of my in- law's cars this way without any issue.

Carvana came to the house with a check and were gone in 15 minutes.
