I joined this site to talk about the A&M v Clemson football game in 2005 but stuck around due to things like the Automotive Board and Politics.

I've learned a lot and shared a few things like how much it cost me to own a 2002 BMW M3 out of warranty and the hassle it was to do a personal import to bring my Jeep Grand Cherokee back from Australia.

I tend to keep cars for a long time but I had to sell everything except my Ford Expedition when I moved to Australia in 2007. Coming back in 2020, it's taken me a while to get back in the car game.

My 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon has been fun but it is just a beating on road trips longer than 50 miles and due to moving back to Texas in 2023 and now being close enough to help with friends and family who are in deteriorating health, I find myself making frequent 200 mile road trips. So, I needed to get a comfortable "saloon" car.

Here it is, a 2014 BMW 760Li with the twin turbo V12.
(I assume history buffs will appreciate the pix of my German U-Boat in front of the 16-inch gun emplacement)









So far, the i-Drive with Sirius XM is a PITA compared to Sirius XM in my Wrangler.


It's not my dream car but so far, so good.

This was my dream car that I drove the hell out of. Man it was fun. But, I'm glad I don't have to spend 4-7 hours/day in my car any more like I did in SoCal.

Thank you for sharing that. I discovered a few features I didn't know the vehicle had.

I've already used that front split corner camera thing when I was parking in my garage today.

Just back from my first road trip.

Went to L'Auberge in Lake Charles to lose money betting on Football. I thought the Detroit Lions were a lock.

That car drives like a dream. Best ride I've probably ever been in. And quiet. My wife and I could talk to each other at normal volumes instead of shouting like we're in a chopper in Predator or Apocalypse Now.

Plenty of acceleration and quiet. I did drive in Comfort mode the entire trip. Didn't really ever notice the 8 spd transmission. Maybe another time I'll play around with Sport Mode.

The car is large so you have to pay attention when parking (when you're not using the Valet of course, LOL) and when driving on I-45 and I-10 with drivers who can't seem to stay in their lane.

I'm sure it will be real easy to get a speeding ticket because it doesn't feel like you're going fast at all. So, I'll have to keep an eye on that.

There are so many options that I've spent a lot of time reading the manual and watching YouTube to try to figure out how certain things work, or what certain buttons do.

This car should almost come with a driver training course.

So far so good.

My only real complaint is that the car is difficult to drive at slow speeds like in a parking lot where you're driving under 5 mph. Something funny with the response in the transmission. Too torquey, I guess.

I might have to fool around with the manual shift when I'm in a parking lot.

Oh, I've got a personalized plate in mind but I'm not going to share what that is until I get it.

Based on James May's comments in that Top Gear segment, something with "More Schnell" would be good.

If I was regularly driving between Junction and El Paso on I-10, I'd definitely do it.

Fortunately, I can already pass the Hyundais and Super Dutys doing 90mph on I-45 when needed.

I went to HS in Waco too. Waco High. '98, ATM '02.
We're Midway and a decade older so we were in the same Class 4A District with all 4 of the Waco High Schools - Waco, Jefferson Moore, Richfield and University.

My 88 y/o father went to the "old old" Waco High (Tigers). I didn't grow up in Waco but we moved to my father's hometown to finish out my last 3 years of HS after I graduated from 9th Grade in Saudi Arabia.

Hopefully you were able to escape from Waco.

My parents and siblings still live there so I needed the new car for my increasingly frequent road trips from my new home in Galveston.

Six degrees of separation and fun fact trivia - the Branch Davidian mail carrier was my parents mailman.

Good deal. Currently in Houston for past 23 years or so. Can't wait to leave this city but wife won't let me out yet. I wouldn't mind going back towards Waco in China Spring or someplace. I usually tell everybody that asks about Branch Davidians that David Koresh was my uncle. Was not though.

I surveyed the Branch Davidian compound a few years ago. I also used to drive by the cemetery where Koresh is buried in Tyler all the time.
