I went way too long with getting my registration renewed in my truck. I haven't done it since 2021 and have now gotten two tickets in the last year.

How do I start this process? I know if it's been this long I need to go by the tax office or something.

Go get it inspected. If you're still in Dallas you'll have to get emissions done.

Take the inspection to the tax office and pay for your registration.

Have you paid the tickets?

You'll also have to pay a special assessment when registering since you received a ticket. No clue if it increases for multiple tickets.

Good news is, you've been expired long enough, your renewal date should reset and you get the entire 12 months not just the prorated months left to the original registration month.

Thank you for the replies. I paid the first one from back in the summer, but I have not paid the one I got yesterday.

Thankfully that's an easy fix-it ticket. Take care of the registration within 10 days of the ticket and the court will dismiss it for $10.

You unfortunately still have to pay the assessment at registration. The last no registration ticket I received, the court verified the assessment was paid when I provided them my registration receipt

Similar Question…But If you live in a non-emissions county and were exempt from inspections (and don't have tickets), is there other paperwork you have to take with you? Or do you just bring a checkbook and give them the license plate number?

You can do it online. I renewed three of my expired registrations on the 1st when inspections went away. As long as you haven't received a ticket, it's no problem. Just need the license plate number and last 4 of the vin. Who knows how long it'll take to actually get the stickers.

You can only do that if it has been expired less than 12 months. This is for a scooter, not my daily driver, and it has been expired about 18 months.

How much is the assessment? Just curious.

Why did you let it go 4 years between registration renewals?

Vehicle didn't run? Or rules don't apply to you?

20% of the registration fee.

Thanks. My daughter was at college last year and it slipped my mind that her sticker expired until she came home for the summer. When I renewed it they ask "Has the car been driven?" Yes. "Did you receive a citation?" No. I assume if I answered Yes to the second question the extra 20% tax errrrrrrrr...."special assessment" would have been tacked on.

Just one of the many services I provide.

Obviously I've paid late registration fees before including penalties.

I had a vehicle that didn't run for 2 years and when I finally got it renewed, I had to get new license plates too because it had been out of service for so long (my RHD Grand Cherokee when I lived in Australia).

Driving around for 4 years without paying the same registration fees that we all pay, that's stealing from you and from me. No different than the fake paper plate drivers.

I recently registered all of my vehicles in Texas and I was a little bit stressed out that they were going to penalize me for not registering them within 30 days of moving to Texas. They never asked how long I'd been in Texas.

Literally FU.

Have you been yelled at for walking on the public street for walking without a mask?

Have you been vax carded?.

Didn't think so.

As a follow-up, I was at the tax office yesterday. The only thing they needed for the scooter (since it was a non emissions vehicle) was the insurance, the license # or VIN, and a check for $50.

Now say I keep one car out of 4 registered. I'm paying just as much as most everyone else. I can only drive 1 car at a time. On a scale of one to ten on the self righteous anger scale, where are you at?

Funny you mention that, we were in San Francisco in April 2021. One of your CA friends yelled at us for not wearing masks in our rental car.

Just did mine online for a truck that expired in November. They still have a $7.50 charge for a "inspection replacement fee" and got a $1 discount for doing it online. Except there were little dollar fees for other things so they give a tiny amount to take a lot more.

When we were leaving LA permanently in August 2023, the wife was driving the 2020 Wrangler with the dog in the backseat.

We open the garage door for her to pull out and she had to wait while some nitwit in a Prius - by himself - wearing a mask comes driving down the street.

I thought that was a perfect note to leave California on.

Weird. My registration expired in Oct 2024 and I just now tried to renew my car's registration online and it says that I do not qualify and have to call them. I also have no tickets.

Dumb guy question....

I thought inspections went away this year, no?

My son doesnt have a muffler on his vehicle. Will he fail inspection? (we live in Williamson County)

Yes, safety inspections went away.

Williamson County still requires emissions testing for vehicles newer than 25 years though that has to be done every year prior to registration renewal.

Not having a muffler 'probably' won't impact approval I don't think...

Thanks. So what good did getting rid of safety inspections do, if I still have to go get an emissions inspection?

Guess we'll take it there and find out. Worst case we throw it back on for the test.

There are only 17 counties that test emissions (all the major metropolitan areas), the other 237 no longer have to deal with any inspections.

Only 17 counties require emissions testing, so in the other 237 you renew your registration online and don't have to go somewhere for them to "test" you brakes, lights and all that other BS and fail you for dark window tint.

I'm in an emissions County and did it a week or so ago and it took about 10 minutes. Safely inspection fee moved over to the registration side as a "fee" (tax)

Safety inspections were a joke anyway and shops hated them, so it's a net positive change overall IMO.

I realize I keep pointing this out in different threads, but the local news really **** the bed on reporting on this law.
The Legislature deserves some kudos

Half of the safety inspection fee went away - you're still saving $7 a year for the half you paid the inspection station but the half you paid the state remains. The fee was split ~10 years ago when the inspection stickers went away in favor of one sticker.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I never looked that closely at my registration renewal before this year.

It was $80.50 renewed online + $18.50 for emissions testing = $99.00 total.

If I live in an emissions county, but the extra vehicle I'm trying to renew and give the government $75 of my hard earned dollars is 39 years old, is an emissions inspection required?

When it comes times for my '16 diesel truck to be renewed, do I have to get it emissions inspected? I'm ready to delete it, and I hear diesels are exempt, but I can't imagine the g-man forgot about diesel bros.
