What car is this?

Barn find exploring an abandoned ranch now owned by an investment group, property will be razed and developed.

I was surprised this was in the only structure on the property with intact windows and was structurally sound. Just left this here, which strikes me as beyond odd. Signs that someone padlocked the door to the garage/barn and took steps to barricade garage door in last 10 years, but has not been a family owned property for nearly a decade - just held by real estate investment company.

Looks like a 1962 Pontiac Catalina? I'd love to somehow get this car saved, ideally would like someone like Vice Grip garage come get it running and drive it off but no idea if there is even an engine under the hood. Possibly a battery charger cable sticking through grill, as if someone was maintaining a bit at some point? No window sticker or license plates, no idea when it last ran but interior is a mess.

I think you're right with it being a '62 Catalina. It's not a GTO, LeMans, or Tempest, and it's not a Bonneville grill. Are the amber lights in the grill add-ons? Catalina's didn't have them. Looks like it had hood pins, so it's been modded some.

Some of those 1962's came with 421 Super Duty block. It's the rarest motor by Pontiac

The 421 Super Duty was originally a race-only drag car upgrade, but it became a complete car for buyers. The 1962 Catalina with the Super Duty 421 could go from 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds

Seriously, that think looks amazing for 60 years old, abandoned for 10 years, and convertible

Thus, my skepticism

Hope you can save it, if real

You wonder if it's real? I took these photos myself, today. Photos always looks a bit better than reality, but even in photos you can see the rust, missing grill decal, appears the hood is wired shut, interior is bad (but better in photo than what I saw through the window).

How long it's been in that spot, I can't verify. All I have access to is tax record and historical google earth imagery. The lady who owned the property passed away in her 90's in 2012. Obituary shows no kids, but nieces and nephews to leave a car to. Owned by a family trust until 2019, then real estate investment LLC since then. Google earth shows no cars parked there and dirt driveway disappearing since at last 2006. A newer house on property was built early 80's but I think no one has lived in it since 2004ish. The older house a couple hundred yards away appears to be at least 35+ years abandoned, the original ranch house, and the garage this car is in is behind that older house. Seems unusual to not have license plate or old registration sticker. Appeared to be tarp on ground next to car, as if it was covering the car at one time, but tarp also looked pretty new. The inside of that garage way cleaner than any other building and all glass was good - doors to older house wide open, broken glass, and a foot of trash on floors.

Lock in the garage looked pretty new. But it makes no sense to me that the family, or anyone tied to real estate llc , would store this car on an abandoned property on a major highway, no fence to jump to walk to it, just a risky place to store. But also amazing it's unmolested, no graffiti on the houses seems like not really explored by people.

I was just really shocked to see it at this location, and overall it does look pretty good and saveable. I haven't looked up value, maybe these aren't worth much and my surprise is not warranted.

Were you around for the MF Barnes takedown? It began when Barnes posted an amazing "barn find" that was a total fraud. The parallels are there

So I'm joking a little bit.

But reading your last post, it sounds like even you can't quite believe it.

Send flat bed. Retrieve and try to sell it as is. Someone will take it.

I'm a bit confused. Do you have ties to the investment firm or did you just pull off the road and go looking in all the windows?

Sounds like you need to contact that firm and let them know that with their permission you'll get it off the property at your expense!

It's a property - old house and structures specifically - that has caught my eye for at least ten years. Seeing it was no longer family owned and instead developer owned led me to go explore with one of my kids who has a similar interest. No connections.

I did reach out via a publicly available email today, to be honest I don't expect a reply. I will try a call next.

If you have access/permission or whatever to snoop in the car, dig through the glove box for registration, insurance cards, maintenance records or receipts. Also look around under the seats and in the trunk for any miscellaneous receipts or anything else with dates or names to date when it was parked or who may have owned it. It's definitely a neat but odd find.

My county appraisal district has online access to the current property owners.

AND they also list the last few owners.

Might be a quicker way to find the original owner, without trespassing.

If you do go back to the car, find the VIN and that might help, too. Maybe search the INternet to find where the VIN is on an older car like this

Yes, my CAD as well and that is how I found the lady who owned it before the RE investment firm, and her obituary from 2012. I did find a relative associated with her trust online as well, he had recently had legal proceedings vs the appraisal district (different property maybe, family sold the property I visited in 2020).

The garage is locked and I can't get in it without someone helping me, either a key or authorization to pop the latch. Trying to find the person who might help, if anyone is willing.

I never replied to this, sorry.

Definitely aware of the MF Barnes phenomena, but not the details. I know he's had MANY claims to fame, but forget each one and did not recall the specific barn find post. I get the connection, but would have made more sense if I claimed this was my garage or I just bought it for $1 and was going to put $100K into it or something.

No problem just having a little fun.

If you have about 8 hours to go down the rabbit hole, this is the post to which I referred.

Yes, this is the auto board thread

Hypothetically...padlocks are not hard to pick. One could slip in there and get the vin and possibly pop the hood and find out if it's a Super Duty 421 car. If it is, buy the property with everything in/on it. As the investment company likely acquired the property with everything in/on it this is probably the best/only way to get clear title to the car, as previous owners probably no longer have clear title.

This is illegal and you should not do it, but those hood pins would definitely have me considering it, and you've already trespassed anyway...

Maybe I shouldn't have sent that email or made this post, I've created a trail of bread crumbs to link me to possible crimes.

The property is worth tens of millions of dollars, which is why I fear they don't care about this car and it could get crushed.

Well then the other option is to cut the lock, drag it out to the road, hire a sketchy wrecker (redundant) to drop it in a storage unit that is not at your house, then start the bonded title process
