Thanks, will check out!
I am open to other brands outside of Merc and Audi. I already have a BMW (sedan) so avoiding BMW.
Went through this with the wife recently. Thought the Audi Q5 would be her choice. It was not. She doesn't like the look of the Lexus. I was not buying BMW or Mercedes.

She ended up with a Genesis GV70. It came down to that or a Volvo XC60. Both have a lot of bells and whistles available. The GV80 and the XC90 had 3rd row seats which we are well past needing.

To get under $60K, you will probably have to go used by a year or 2 if you want a really well equipped version.

I personally think the GV70 we bought with the 2.5T is slightly underpowered. It is fine to drive and you never really notice it, but we drive a lot of highway miles and to cruise at 80 it turns a few too many rpms for my taste. Maybe the 3.5T would have been a better choice.

Find the gently used Lexus she likes. No regrets there.
I bought a 2015 RX350 with 49k miles on it in 2018 and paid $24,900. New ones sticker was $54k at the time. Beautiful car in great shape and half price. Even if you buy one with fewer miles and not three years old, let someone else take that first depreciation hit. You can find a used that is in like new shape and save a chunk, or upgrade to a nicer vehicle in the same budget.

It's a milestone anniversary coming up so I want to buy my wife a SUV (she prefers SUVs to sedans. She has one right now, a 2011 model. I want to buy her something which is in the Audi, Mercedes level. Any suggestions? I bought my last car 10 years ago so am clueless about what is out there.

The price I am thinking is $50-60k.
Any brands more expensive than this? Any brands to avoid?
Half of one of these:

Maybe a CPO Macan GTS (I'm sure base is much cheaper)

These 2 are beautiful. Thanks for the suggestions.

The Audi above, what model is it?

I like the Lexus in general, but it won't make an impact like I hope. One of our friends had one 15 years ago (back then we just had a Honda Accord car for me and a Ford Focus car for her).

Lexus is a great brand, but she will go meh. I would buy it in a heartbeat but the goal is to make her go wow from a woman's perspective. Thanks for the suggestion though.

You don't need to buy her a new car for that. Just take her to Target, notice when she gets her hair done, or buy her a card for no reason. Don't overthink this.

While we're talking right-sized SUVs, here's one that's on my to-do list.

Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sierra /texags

I know it's a Hyundai but go look at a loaded Pallisade. The tech in that sucker will blow her mind and you can get a brand new one for 50k.

What about when the Hyundai or Kia need warranty work or service? I heard that experience is terrible across the dealerships.

Well I did that at the beginning of our marriage eons ago when I was a lolpoor and tight-fisted. I am much better off now, so I think I can spend a little more to make her happy.

Beautiful. I will add this to my list of cars to consider. (I say this without looking a the price!!)

Looks and "class of car" are very important from a woman's perspective. Women don't care about the technical specs like auto-nerds do.

This Merc is awesome.

Given her vehicle is 13 years old and you haven't bought a car in the last 10 years, it seems like y'all drive cars for a decade or more, so my advice is to not look at the Germans. They're beautiful and fun, but will leave you in bankruptcy unless you leave her first.

If my assumption is the accurate, I would look at the Japanese luxury lines.
- Lexus RX or GX...or TX if you need a 3 row
- Infiniti QX
- Acura MDX

The diving experience isn't going to be what the German gals will be, but they'll treat you right and grow old with you.

Well, I thought of that. I will pay a down-payment of about 20% and I plan on paying it off entirely within 3-6 months.
I have no debt right now, and I don't plan on taking on more that lasts for more than a few months. Mental peace with no debt is priceless.

My goal is to get a good final price rather than a good APR. If I can get the dealer to reduce the price in order to go with his financing, then I will do so.

If I were to buy for myself, I would definitely look at Lexus. This is meant to be a 25th anniversary gift, so the show of it is more important than how long it lasts. My wife does not post on instagram/facebook but like all women, she does like getting gifts. The earlier cars I got her were utility cars. I want this to be something she is happy to drive.

Anniversary/birthday gift?

I will make sure she test drives and approves before I make the purchase. She won't wake up one morning and see a car with a huge bow on it on the driveway. Those don't end well.

So my attempt is to make a shortlist of cars that I am comfortable price wise, and what I think she will like. I will check out the Genesis. Volvo won't do it.

I might be okay going up to 60k, no more though. The plan is to go with 2024 models, the ones they want to push out the lot. No 2025. Miles less than 10k.

We are about to do the same exercise moving her from a 2017 Cadillac XTS.

We are considering the following:

  • Genesis GV70 3.5T
  • Ford Explorer (the one with 400HP just because)
  • Kia Telluride

Our biggest issue with the Genesis is that we will have to go to SAT to buy it because we live a little remote and I'm not sure how we would handle service if we need it under warranty since we are 2 hours from SAT. I know they have a concierge service but I'm not sure if there mileage limits to that.

Why not buy a brand new version of what she's currently driving? I'm assuming she's enjoyed it given how long she's been driving it.

Lexus RX is the obvious suburban wife vehicle that is proven reliable. We bought one for my wife and it was great but just too crowded with three teenagers and their school/sports gear. If you don't have a big crew to haul around, its hard to beat.

I've been eyeing the Lexus TX myself. Bit more roomy than the RX. There have been a few recalls related to the TX but I believe those issues have been addressed.

You can't go wrong sticking with the Toyota/Lexus lines. My wife drives a Highlander Limited Platinum. It is all wheel drive. We bought it used with 25k on it. It was leased before we bought and had all of the service records. It looked brand new. Seems like we paid around the mid-$30k's for it.

Not a gift, but the 1st car she chose basically completely on her own and we've been married 32 years.

A '24 for $60k will work easily for the Genesis.
