My young son has gone out and purchased himself a used 2016 Dodge Ram from a local dealer here in san antonio, for around 18k, 100k miles on it with 2 previous owners.

I am not familiar with Dodge, but I have heard of the "hemi blow up"...

What do we need to be concerned about with on this truck, etc?

I have a coworker with a 2012 Ram 4x4 and his Hemi 5.7 just grenaded with 165K on the clock. He sold it to the shop for $2500 as the quoted engine replacement was $7K. Shop said they see this all the time with Hemis.

Replace your oil pump with a Hellcat or Melling pump to eliminate Hemi tick.

My BIL has one of that vintage which went to 340k miles before the transmission went out. If you hear it ticking, make sure it isn't the exhaust manifold. It could be the exhaust manifold AND a lifter. As PMD03 said, if you have an upgraded oil pump it should help your lifters should survive much past 100k. I had a JGC with a hemi & it developed a tick around 130k miles. I rebuilt the top end after the bad lifter ground down a cam lobe. Drove it for a few weeks & traded it in.

Apparently that costs ~$250 for part but about $2,000 to install, because there's a lot to disassemble...

OUCH.

Would running synthetic oil and keeping up with the oil changes put this off? Or is upgrading the oil pump the only real way?
