I have a car I never drive and its registration has now expired.

With inspections going away at end of year, can I just wait to renew until next year and not worry about the inspection?

They're not going to make to retroactively get it inspected or anything, right?

Yes, you can wait until January. Your new sticker will still have the same expiration month as your current one, but you won't have to worry about an inspection.

I am expecting a long line at our county tax office on January 2nd from everyone doing the same thing.

I've also noticed less shops are currently doing inspections. If their inspection guy quit, they didn't try to backfill the position.

Just drive it 'till you get a ticket, then get it inspected.

Enforcement by people than TAMU/CSPD is almost 0.

If you want to renew registration now, just say car is out of state and you don't need an inspection.

Just to clarify, this is not true for the below counties.

I used to work in a little suburb. During the first week of each month, a cop would stand at the busiest intersection and hand out tickets to people with expired registrations and inspections.

I went to get both of ours inspected this summer at a local shop and they just printed out a pass and gave it to me and told me to have a good day.

This is emissions. The safety inspection ($7.50) goes away in all 254 counties. Nice for folks with dark tint or film on the interior of the windshield.

And the current safety inspection is $15. IDK why the news reports have had it wrong for a year. You pay half to the inspection station and half to the state during registration.

The inspection station's half is going away, but you still owe the state their $7.50 as a new "inspection slush fund" fee

Yep, but I'm ok with that because I love my dark tint in the Texas heat and now that inspection hassle is gone.

For those of us in the emissions counties how will that work? We will just need to take it in for them to test the emissions before renewing registration? They won't inspect anything else?

Lived in Harris for a bit. They guy i used to go through just passed everything as long as it passed a visual (which really wasn't much).

When you think about it, its not in the shops best interest to fail something.... last I checked they don't re-charge if you fail and return.

That's fine but I'm more asking what will be the official process starting next year.

If they sell windshield wipers, brake/blinker/head lights or tint then they can make some extra money.....

My dude is the only guy that does them anymore since they are about to go away. He owns a drive through shop. He inspected all three of mine with just the VIN. I drove one truck in, he takes my money, prints out the passed ticket, never gets in, never causes trouble. Then I threw him a few extra bucks he prints the tag for all other vehicles on my insurance as passed. LOL.

got an inspection done this weekend in Harris Co. the tech laughed and said going forward you can have bald tires and no working lights as long as your check engine light is not on or throwing any codes you will pass.

The "inspection" has always been a joke anyway. I see registration stickers 2-3 years out of date regularly as well so the cops don't care either, and only tack it on if they stop you for something else.

I got my wife's car inspected this weekend for a 12/24 sticker.

I didn't mind paying the $7.50 (non-emissions county). She's a teacher and the school's PD writes more inspection sticker tickets than speeding tickets through the school zone.

Bless them... :-/

Don't forget you pay another $7.50 to the state at registration. Wait 30 days and save money

I did the same as I wasn't sure if I'd have to go to the courthouse next month. Also had to pay another $7.50 when renewing online but don't want a run in with the popo.
