OK, so I have been battling this for several weeks. Gas pump clicks off and it will not take gas. There is something blocked in the gas tank vent system.

I replaced the charcoal canister and vent valve/solenoid which also contained the breather/screen. No change in the problem. The charcoal canister was spilling pellets out of the port that attaches to the gas tank vent hose.

Now I am reading that the tubing between the gas tank and the charcoal canister are probably clogged with charcoal pellets.

Is there any way to get this clean without dropping the gas tank? I don't think I can drop the gas tank myself, as it seems like a nightmare from the videos I have seen.

I thought about trying to unplug the gas tank vent line from the charcoal canister and blow/force air into the filler neck with a shop vac. However, I doubt I can get enough pressure built up to force those pellets backwards and out of that unplugged gas tank vent line.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Blow it out with compressed air?

That would be the thing to do, but you would have to drop the tank to get access to all of those lines. If you blew compressed air into the line from the tank to the vapor canister, that might actually blow pellets into the gas tank. Was trying to approach from some way to pressurize the tank and blow them back out the way they came from.

Same year same problem. My suggestion is to drop the tank, blow out all lines, change fuel pump and do NOT wait longer on this. I had to actually replace the tank because of my procrastination.

Also don't ever top off or round up. I actually stop at 18-20 gallons when I'm below 1/4 tank so I never deal with this again

Is it not just a block in the vent paralleling the filler line?

Thanks SnowboardAg. I read through the other threads on your link. I wonder if Ag_Eng98 could chime in and describe how he rigged a vacuum to suck the carbon out of the lines at the charcoal canister. I actually thought about doing this, but figured it might be dangerous sucking gas fumes into a shop vac (explosion risk).

Edit: After re-reading the other threads, he did post a link to a vacuum kit. However, I am still not sure about sucking gas vapor into any sort of vacuum cleaner.

The fuel tank vent valve is built in and a huge PITA if it backs up into that area. That's why I say don't wait on it.

Have you tried holding the gas pump handle upside down? That works on S197 Mustangs that have a filler vent issue. Mine would only fill up halfway until I found out about that trick.

Weird. Watched several of the videos for this issue again this morning after realizing our '10 Burb is having this issue again and then this thread pops up

I replaced the canister 2 years ago, but that was it. Worked much better for awhile, but its doing it again. I ordered the purge valve and the vent solenoid today ($50) in hopes of half-ass fixing it without dropping the tank and blowing out the lines.

I think after considering this more, I am just going to take a shop vac to the line from the charcoal canister to the fuel tank. I will just do 1-2sec at a time. I don't think that would be that risky.

Can you put a vapor canister inline? Catch the fumes before they reach the vacuum pump.

2012 Tahoe. This is same problem we have. You can put about 1/5th gallon in before it cuts off. Then repeat for about 30 minutes to fill up. I was quoted $1500 or so.

Keep overfilling and that charcoal will turn to clay. Then try clearing the codes. lol

My A&M son and I dropped the tank on a 2005 Yukon. It wasn't bad at all once you had the spare tire, vapor cannister and rear solenoid near it off. Took both of us to get it back up in place and get positioned correctly though (tank was almost empty). Used vacuum on the lines running to the tank and got a good amount out. Couldn't get much out of the line running up to the front of the engine for the purge solenoid but could hear them rattling inside. Took the purge solenoid off up front, made sure we had it free on both ends and pushed water through it and couldn't believe how the massive amount of charcoal pellets that poured out. Dried the line as best we could with air and put it all back together and problems solved.
