Please resist the temptation to welcome me to 200x or whatever. I've never really done much to my car stereos over the years except replace speakers back in the day.

I have a '16 F150 with the standard head unit, Sync 2, I believe. I am traveling a lot more and getting tired of using my phone (iPhone) for directions. I want that and other apps up on the screen. I don't need a huge screen -- just something that fits. Mainly, I want recommendations on brand and where to shop. I'm not doing this myself.

I see Cartoys has Sony, Alpine, Kenwood, and Pioneer units ranging in price from $250-700, but I'd like to stay around the middle of that. CD would be a plus but not mandatory (sorry to cause massive eye-rolls; I often get CDs from church for Christmas/Easter music to listen to and prepare for and like to listen to it in the truck).

So, what brands and features, not to mention retailers, do you recommend?

If you want it to look OEM you can buy a Sync3 module that fits in the exact same footprint as the Sync2 module you have now. You can buy it off Amazon and have it programmed to your VIN. Takes a couple hours to install in an afternoon. I did this a couple years ago and it's been a game changer. There was just a thread on doing this within the last week or two.

Also foursyncetech.com. He will be cheaper than Infortainment and 4d.

I second this. I've used them a few times to replace head units, and they were great. Their pricing is very competitive, and they're available to answer questions via phone if you get stuck during installation (even on the weekends).
