I drive a 2nd gen tundra with 80k on it. She runs great and have zero intentions of getting a new car, that being said I'm curious how often most on here get a new car? I heard somebody refer to a 2012 car as a beater and it made me chuckle

About 200k miles. Depending on what type of vehicle it is.

Which ends up to be about 4-5 years, as I out a lot of miles on vehicles and usually buy used with about 25-50k miles.

Tundra forever.

Daily driver every 5 years. Very low miles so we get a decent trade.

I try for 150. I am not against going higher, but the vehicle had better be running in tip top shape. Once they get over 150 they are on a short leash. I don't have time to do a bunch of small repairs and would rather not replace a big ticket item. Swap it out while you can still get decent value and before you have to start sinking more money into them.

I've got a 2000 Tundra with 286k on it. What is this "replace" you speak of?

My 2014 Tacoma only has about 217k on it and it's paid off.

Why replace it?

Average 9 years. Mileage all over but probably average a little over 100k. Had an extended cab 06 Sierra until 2014 when I traded for a crew cab Silverado. Still have it with 101k. Got the itch for a new one but just replaced my wife's 11 year old Acadia that had 159k.

Wife and I have a '15 Jeep GC w/ 128k, '14 Silverado w/ 170k, and '19 Mustang GT w/ 41k. None are giving us any problems so we just keep driving them. Each was bought with extremely low miles, paid off quick and maintenance done by me.

Especially right now with the prices of new vehicles and the chitty quality you get.

308K on the last one, 348K on the one before that.

We trade Roughly every year. The joke used to be if it needed tires it was time to trade it in. Now it's approaching if it needs an oil change level of craziness.

I replace them when I need to, but try to keep them as long as I can.

Since I've been out of college...
1. 2005 - Bought a used 1998 Frontier...basic as you could buy. Didn't even have power steering
2. 2007 - Sold '98 Frontier for a '07 Frontier CC for more room and comfort
3. 2012 - Bought 2013 Edge for wife after we found out we were having first child
4. 2017 - Bought used '09 (IIRC) Maxima after asshat took off from red light and got t-boned by my '07 Frontier
5. 2018 - Sold Maxima to buy wife 2017 Odyssey after having #3. I took over the Edge
6. 2023 - Edge had oil pressure problems that would cost more than it's value, so traded it in on a left over '22 Accord

Wife's Odyssey has about 112k (or somewhere in there) and the Accord has 29k. Plan to drive both as long as we possibly can. Hopefully #3 will be in HS when we replace Odysseus, and I'm hoping I can keep the Accord until he's out of HS.

Depends on the car and how reliable it has been. We only put like 10k miles per year on our two main DDs, so we could easily go 8-10 years, and then it's just a matter of maintenance, surprise repairs, and boredom.

Is this a work funded thing?
Did you just skip finance class?
Or, are you just independently wealthy?

I assumed that was just a sh\t post, but you would not be surprised.

My old boss had a history of leasing trucks (Tundra, then GMC Sierra AT4), and as soon as they needed new tires at ~30k miles, he traded them in. I told him he was an idiot, and he agreed, but he still did it.

I've seen many people trade their car in after two years simply because they want to keep up appearances. Couldn't be me but whatever floats your boat I guess, seems inefficient

I have a cousin that did that with a couple of Mustangs when he was married to his last wife.

It's colleagues like that who I leaned terms like "negative equity" from.

One of my favorites was the guy who went from an F-250 to an F-350 dually with the Lariat package because he was about $10,000 upside down on his F-250 so he had to get a more expensive truck to cover what he owed on his trade.

And my sales rep who kept getting bullied at my misogynistic employer because she was driving an 8 year old C-Class Mercedes that she still hadn't paid off.

She showed up one day with a E55 AMG and tried to explain to me how she had to get the E-Class because she still owed so much on the C-Class.

I drive my cars for about 15 years. That may come to an end if my wife gets the airstream trailer she wants b/c we don't currently have a suitable tow vehicle.

I used to think I was holding onto cars a long time by waiting until 100k miles to replace them. Now some cars can seemingly go forever with diligent maintenance. Today I think 200k is a reasonable expectation for many cars.

Not sure how the recent but widespread switch to smaller turbo charged engines will change things. It is possible that average lifespan may decrease over the next few years. I have a '15 Navigator with a 3.5 Ecoboost that runs perfectly, yet the new Tundras are needing engine replacements 1-year in. I have no idea if the Ram Hurricane inline 6 is reliable or not.

Our current vehicles are a 2002 diesel for the RV with 160k miles, a 2015 farm diesel with 135k, and a 2018 Highlander with 60k

Before that we had 2004 farm pickup sold at 186k, 2006 pickup being used as wife's DD 245k, 2008 MSX sold at 240k, and 2001 Oddy 303k

I do a lot of the work myself, and have the shop and tools to do so. But as I get older, it's harder to work on stuff, and it will be less safe to break down.

But I still like buying used and running the wheeels off them

About every 3 to 4 years, Always new or near new. This year was crazy. Bought a 2023 Silverado 2500 in April and have already replaced with with a new 24 Colorado two weeks ago. Also have a 2022 Tesla and am considering ditching it for a new X Plaid.

I do it because I like newer vehicles and the changes they bring. Does it cost more money than holding on to them? Of course. But it's just money and I'm not hurting for it. People waste money on different things. Mine is cars.

Yea I bought her in 2017 and only had 40k. I don't drive it besides work and store and such. She's in great shape, don't eat in the car, keep it clean, make sure oils changed etc….
