As the title says, I will be selling one of my Land Cruisers soon (for sale by owner) and want to keep the plates to transfer to another vehicle. Has anyone here done this and know how to do this? Do I just keep the plates when the new buyer drives off and they need to get a temp plate? Thanks in advance!

Keep the plates. It's buyer's responsibility to buy one time trip plates from DPS.

Make sure you fill out the notice of sale form with DPS once its sold.

You should keep the plates even if they aren't custom. This forces the buyer to register the vehicle and then you don't end up with thousands in unpaid tolls, or other expenses linked back to you via the plate.

Just do the buyer a favor and remind them ahead of time to get the temp plates.

Thanks all for the advice. I will be listing first in the LC thread here as I would like to sell to a fellow Ag. It's been a great vehicle, I'm just replacing with a newer model ('10 to a '19).

As I learned when I bought a vehicle with Custom plates, the buyer CAN NOT keep them on the car. They are registered to the individual rather than the car so unless the seller relinquishes them to the state and the buyer orders them directly they can't transfer with the vehicle.

This. The plates belong to the individual and are merely registered to the VIN. Just take the plates to the tax office and register to new car's VIN.

I have done this before a few times You can go into your tax office, take your registration sticker and tell them you are taking custom off and need regular plates. Pay a small fee, get new plates and sticker. It's very simple. Then keep your custom ones to put on new vehicle.

If you are selling your older car, you don't need to do that. Never sell a car with plates registered to you still attached.

Let me tell you about the time a guy got multiple parking tickets mailed to him from his old car he sold months ago. What a pain.

Don't forget to remove your toll tag if you have one?
