For moderate hauling, which engine makes the most sense in your opinion?

Who cares about making sense? There's no replacement for displacement. Wait for the 9.5L.

The 3.0 diesel

Now I'm looking at this as well. Most driving will be city driving so really like the extra MPG. Never had a diesel before. How does routine maintenance costs compare to gasoline?

For that 3.0 not much different. I had it for 3 years and loved it. You need to periodically add def but you also don't need premium fuel like the 6.2 does. The power band of the 3.0 is just so much better when towing or hauling. With both the 5.3 and 6.2 you'll also have DFM which can be maintenance issues down the road too. I think that 3.0 may be the best half ton engine out right now.

Id also rather tow with the 2.7 than the 5.3. More torque and payload capacity than the 5.3.

I'm staying away from 5.3 and 6.2 next time. If 1500, I'm getting a 3.0 but a little interested in the 2.7. Or just go big with 2500 6.6 gasser but it would be overkill for me.

Get 3.0. That engine is awesome. Drive one and you'll get it. I have about 18,000miles on my SLT w/ 3.0 and I love it. The 5.3 is a POS in comparison.

3.0 gang here. About 25k miles on it and it's been great.

This is quite the "testimony" for the 3.0. The 5.3, to me, has been pretty reliable for all around. Well at least in the Gen. III and IV version 5.3.

Have the 5.3 and think it's great paired with the 10 speed transmission.

I run regular 87 gas in my 6.2 and it runs just fine. And before I'm called an idiot the service manager at my dealer told me to do it. you may sacrifice a tiny bit of power but otherwise its fine.

5.3 could be a great engine, just like the old one without afm/dfm but regulations ruined it

Thanks for all the feedback. With all of the testimonials here, online, and from close friends, I'll be owning my first diesel truck. Thanks again.

Another happy vote for the baby duramax. 2024 Tahoe and wife loves it.

I've got the 6.2 AT4 and love it, FIL has the High country and says the same. Only issue I have is just hit 61k miles and of course need new shocks….now the real debate goes.

And another buddy has the 3.0 diesel, he loves it other than the occasional sensor BS.

My only complaints about my 3.0 are that the seats could be a little softer and I wish it had a larger DEF tank. The tank is 2.5-3 gallons I believe and I have to put a new jug of Blue DEF every 3000ish miles. Friends F250 is around 6 gallons.

Other than that, it is the best truck I have owned.
