So I have rented 4 cars fairly recently. 3 on vacations/work trips, and one when my wife got sideswiped while driving my land rover.

Chevy suburban - If you need a giant car, this is awfully nice... except the 30 year old engine. I liked it a LOT unless I had to accelerate. It is just slow. Drove a premier trim for a week in Corona del Mar California. It was my son's favorite car of the rentals. Would never take one off road, this is for soccer teams, not getting off road

Toyota Camry - I understand why they sell a million of these. For a cheap car it is really good. Everything is in the right place, 35-40 mpg, drive is fantastic. Drove it for 4-5 days around Austin and they are just a REALLY good car. I would absolutely own a Camry, especially if I drove a ton of miles in a good weather state. In fact I don't know of anything better for a Texas type of driver.

Genesis GV80 Electric. Rented one in Malibu for a week. Really fast, really nice, drives amazing. I didn't know much about electric cars and range anxiety affected me. Electric cars are better than gas in every way except range anxiety, the sound, and towing. They drive incredibly but I wouldn't own one unless it was a second/local car.

Ford Expedition Max - great, great, great engine, everything else was uninspiring. So many ratttles and cheap stuff. Had auto everything, cup holders everywhere, nice seats, but it was kind of like they threw lipstick on a pig. Well lipstick, base, foundation, eye stuff, shadowing, etc. It is kind of a crappy SUV with tons and tons of gimmicks added. Great engine though... and comfy on a long drive. Took it to Vail one day and everyone slept the whole way back except me. Really roomy. I think it is smaller than the Suburban. Would never ever take it off road. Also a soccer SUV.

Also rented some total turds, but who cares. Only one of the four I would buy is the Camry but I have zero need for it.

This year I've had a Grand Wagoneer, Pacifica, Malibu, and Santa Fe. They were ok.

The Wagoneer was in Colorado and had a lot miles that I assume were rough. I definitely didn't baby it. But we liked it.

The other three were cheap feeling and hard to figure out all the controls. The technology in cars has changed so much that simple operations are complicated or hard to find.

Yep on the Malibu. Rented on of those in DFW. I grouped in the "Turds" category and didn't even bother.

I like renting the Mustang Mach-E when I take business trips to more liberal areas and their rental fleets are littered with them.

They are fun to drive.

Got a Chevy Equinox in Alaska on Turo. Absolutely drove the **** out of it. Had it severely overloaded with 4 grown men, luggage and fish boxes. Took it on an awful road with washboard, then impact craters. Damn thing handled everything we asked it to. I will never own one. Just wanted to share my rental story. In a couple weeks we are Turo'ing a nice Benz suv.

Highlights of my more distant past rentals were a Chrysler 300 and a Hyundai Sonata

I rent Expeditions whenever I travel (2x month). I love them.

Not sure I could stomach to buy a new one but man they are nice.

I had a Wrangler 4xe in El Paso not too long ago. I found that the Red Sands public desert area was about 5 minutes away from the job site.

I held it mostly at WOT for about a minute before I came across a large dip that launched the ass end in the air.

Had a Jeep Wrangler reserved at San Fran airport. Took 4 hours to get through the line at the counter and into the Jeep. Half a day of our vacation.

Honestly, the only way to rent these days is with one of the frequent renter programs where you can skip the line at major airports.

You're still going to have to talk to the cute girl at the counter in small airports like Butte, MT.

I flew into DFW last Friday night and there must have been 40 people in the line at National.

And places like Las Vegas... You better be in multiple frequent renter programs. And even then I've had to rent at the counter from a 3rd rental car chain.

Ive basically become a Turo guy ... esp after having to go to fartass Midland often where the rental counters are an absolute sh*tshow.

Nice to just have a car waiting after a flight, or delivered to a hotel while out of town.

Theres a guy in Midland i just call directly now and take either his TRX or Raptor when in town. We have a Maserati lined up for San Diego in a few weeks.

I was. It didn't help. 2 hour line. We don't have a jeep. It felt like the Seinfeld car rental episode. They wound up reducing it by 50% for a week rental.

Drove. Highlander for a week in Maine, the third seat is horrible, but the screen made me reach all the way across. Don't recommend it.

I drove a v8 Durango for a month. I liked it so much I bought one. I don't care what experts say about dodge. I like that car, naturally aspirated, captains chairs, and third row is comfortable. 11 inch screen is good too.

I drove a jeep grand wagoneer in Florida. It felt kind of top heavy and I didn't really like it.

I learned a valuable lesson recently. Rented a 2019 Mercedes C class in Arizona via Turo.

Was in the middle of the desert and had a blowout.

No spare.

Always check for spares. lol.

Why the hell are y'all still waiting in lines for a rental car? Continues to baffle the hell out of me.

Sign up for National's Emerald Club (it's free) and you walk right to your car, get in, and go. I haven't talked to a human at a counter to rent a car in a decade or more. You don't get to pick the exact model you want but it's always a mix of sedans and SUVs. And if you want to upgrade simply request select Premier and you walk one row over and select whatever premier model you want....and go....without talking to anyone.

Our last trip I upgraded to a Premier and walked right up to a Grand Wagoneer and took that. That vehicle is an absolute beast. It's like driving a bus but with a pretty decent engine. It's really quiet and comfortable but I would never own one. It's massive. Also don't understand how anyone would pay $100k for it.

You are assuming the reserved Jeep was onsite.

Not sure what you mean. I didn't book the Wagoneer. I booked a Premium and it was one of my choices along with Tahoes and some other nice sedans I don't recall. Picked the Wagoneer simply because I was curious about it.

California. We specifically booked a Jeep Wrangler. Wasn't onsite. Like Seinfeld says, you know how to book the reservation, you just don't know how to hold the reservation...

Last rental car was a eco boost mustang in California in wine country. Country roads were fun in that thing

Have another trip to California planned in December and rented from National at standard level

Oh, your rental. Yeah, I don't care about booking specific models. I book a class of car.

Thus, there is never a reason to stand in a line.
