Looking at adding a company truck and looking at the Powerboost.

What do people think of it?

I have narrowed out most everything else due to one thing or another.

Had a Ram a couple years ago and everything broke
Don't trust the Tundra engine
GM/Chevy only use 35 year old engine designs plus I live at high altitude and prefer turbo/supercharged. The 2.7 is insufficient.
Nissan is going away

I know the ecoboost 3.5 is simpler but I like the idea of the generator on board as I do a lot of backcountry stuff

Dealership is offering about 10k off and 1.9% for 36 months

I have a 2021, one of the first in the initial batch, and have had zero problems and love it.

The ones I am looking at are antimatter blue or white XLT with appearance pack plus, FX4 pack, 7.2 kw power pack, and tow pack. It has black leather interior, black wheels, etc. I would immediately do a 2.5 inch level and bump the tires to a A/T with the maple leaf (snow rated). Either a duratrac, KO3, or toyo open country.

Really the only thing missing are heated steering wheel and a/c seats.

The lack of a heated steering wheel is ridiculous and steering me away from XLTs. My 2020 Silverado RST is an XLT 303a equivalent and it came with a heated steering wheel.

Have you considered the 3.0L baby diesel of GM? It does not fit your GM profile and I think it is a great engine. I have had the 3.5 boost and the 3.0 diesel. I love them both, but probably lean towards the 3.0.

Just curious if you're referring to the 3.5 Ecoboost or Powerboost? That extra punch on the PB is pretty fantastic. I've got a '21 EB and a '23 PB in the garage and they are not equals. Nothing against the 3.0, though. Good engine, I just preferred the PB driving profile.

I am referring to the ecoboost. Did not know the PB was a thing…..apologies.

Power boost is an option on my shopping list right now. What's the EV mode like in these? I spend a lot of time driving down 35mph lake roads, so that could be nice. My wife's hybrid highlander kicks the engine on at 20 mph which makes it useless.

I've been in electric mode going as fast as 50 mph. That's not common, but at 30-40 on surface streets it runs electric about 30% of the time on average.

Consumer Reports hates the Powerboost engine, but all the online reviews from individual owners seem to be positive. Not sure why there is such a disconnect.

Probably bc the boost had a some problems that took Ford awhile to smooth out. A lot of owners were also changing oil at 10k mile intervals contributing to that problem. Performance and fuel wise it's bad ass.

It's a bit smarter than that and not 100% dependent on speed. It depends on the demand. I've in the Austin area with lots of hills and it frequently shuts off the engine at 45+ with even the slight decline. You can also just lightly tap the brakes and cue it to go to electric only basically anytime if you are just coasting.

I get 23-24 MPG on my 10 mile commute on the regular.

'21 Lariat trim with 7.2 kW gen on-board here and absolutely love the truck. My towing needs don't push the vehicle at all (utility trailer only) so can't speak much to that, but never had any issues and have no real complaints.

The early ones (mine included) seem to get stuck in the OTA software updating process but got that sorted with a few hours of work and now it updates again perfectly on its own.

The 3.0 duramax diesel is about 4 years old and is supercharged. Probably the best half ton engine I've ever had.

Folks on Reddit seem to have quite a few issues also, even with taking into account that most folks that comment on things are from the negative

2022 powerboost- about 30k miles.
I like it. Have gotten a little over 27 mpg in 50 mph, steady cruise.
Kick A$$ acceleration when you need it.
Have never used the generator.

To be fair, a turbocharger is technically a type of supercharger, but also to be fair, no one refers to a turbo as a supercharger in common parlance.

Very true, I forgot that was the case dating back to aircraft. That is what I get for being a wise @ss. While no one uses the terms that way today, it is no less true. My apologies to TeslaAg, I'm sure he meant "supercharger" in the general sense to classify the Duramax as a forced induction engine

Has always shifted… a bit clunky. Supposedly can flash the system and will smooth out.

AC evap went out somewhere around 20k.

Glitchy parking brake that has self applied a couple times after driving, shutting truck off, then restarting. Thankfully hasn't happened in almost year & half. Dealer couldn't find anything, of course.

Fuel pump went out at 36,089 but thankfully covered under warranty. Don't ask me about Tommie Vaughn saying my battery was no good when restarting it after the repair…even though they had the truck less a week before doing a 35,xyz oil change & check up before rolling out of warranty and said everything was "almost perfect".

Expansion and isolation valves on fuel system just went out at 44k. Now out of warranty for $1,300.

Love the interior comfort, capacity, fuel economy, and smooth ride. Really not a fan of its mechanical issues thus far.

That is a seriously bad reliability record. Sorry you got a bad one

I am currently renting a Expedition XL as my wife was driving my Landrover and got sideswiped. So it is in the shop getting repaired. The Expedition has a great engine but really nothing else. Transmission is not smooth, everything rattles, and it REALLY doesn't like bumpy roads. I am test driving the Powerboost tomorrow and if it is like the Expedition I won't get it. Couldn't handle something that feels so cheap. Every time you hit a 1 inch bump the front suspension makes that low pitched thump that sounds like a bolt broke. I don't know why that sound makes me cringe so bad

I recently rented a Suburban 4wd Premier in California. Felt nicer than the Expedition but the engine (5.3L) is just so weak. It is sad GM won't make a modern engine. Aside from the engine, the Suburban was pretty nice.

I have a 2016 2.7 twin turbo for driving to work. 273,000 miles so far and still running well.....just changed the oil every 5K

23 PB here.

29K miles. Zero issues. Riding on Ford performance bilstein shocks and 35" recon grapplers

Lost a few MPG when I leveled and went 35.

Future Mrs 1ags daily drives if for now but it's needed nothing other and filters and fluids. Will change transmission fluid soon.

I am really interested in this powertrain for the built in 7.2kw generator. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences.

There are some really bad horror stories out there about reliability, unfortunately. Finding a gold certified one is very uncommon and I am too risk averse to drop $35k+ on a truck without a warranty. Minimum price to get new is XLT 301a 4x4 which is now $60k. Yikes.

Mainly pulling and powering a camper. Not necessarily for the house, but it would be nice to have available without an additional piece of equipment to maintain.

Anyone know if this powertrain will ever come to the Expedition/Navigator?

Really thinking about switching to an SUV for my next vehicle but I would love to have this powertrain.
