If you can find someone with a PIWIS or Launch type scanner that can pull Porsche module codes, I'm happy to look in PPN service data to see if there's any diagnostic steps. Having a code works best. Their service data for 3rd party "shops" isn't the most comprehensive.

I can also pull all your option codes, PCM enabling codes, and service history if interested.

Thanks for the feedback! I actually have a friend who is pretty serous about his own maintenance, and he ~might~ be able to do that. I'll have to ask him.

I've been relying on Porsche North Houston for all my maintenance. I have a good relationship with them, and because this is my daily driver, I like being able to get a loaner.

With that said, when I searched the Porsche forums for this problem, I read a couple of stories about misdiagnosis. One owner said he spent something like $2k on other repairs that didn't fix the problem, only to end up having to do the repair that I mentioned in my first post. The confusion was blamed on Porsche diagnostics that incorrectly diagnose the problem/repair.

I guess this problem goes back to 2013 (I saw posts about owners of that model having it), but I think the most recent post I saw about it was maybe 2021. So nothing super recent about this problem or updates regarding diagnosis and repair.

My concern is taking it in for repair and spending $$$ and wasted time on things that don't fix the problem.

How are you able to pull my codes? I would be interested in that. I assume you need access to the car, though. I am in Houston/The Woodlands.

Edited to add: posts I've read about this indicate that there are two side microswitches that have to be replaced to solve this problem. But Porsche diagnostics does not indicate that's the problem (switches read as though they are functioning properly), so dealers try to replace other things (like the latch). It would be nice to hear from someone who has done this repair more recently and didn't have the issues with the diagnostics (because Porsche now knows what causes the problem and how to fix it).

I'll be in the Houston in a couple of weeks and might be able to pull codes then. I'm not a Porsche mechanic (and have no experience with their convertible tops). I just like to have the tools to work on my own cars including PIWIS/PPN. If your friend has PIWIS or any of the 3rd party Launch/Autel based scanners, he should be able to pull the codes.

I think this Topdon scanner will also pull all of the Porsche module codes and do light coding. It has bidirectional controls so you might be able to put the top up/down and view live data from the app

I will ask him if he has any of those. Let's keep in touch. Depending on what he says, if you're in town and it's not too inconvenient, maybe you can do it.

Sounds good. Right now, I think I'll have some time on Oct 4. Should take 5-10 mins to scan all the modules and I can give you a PDF with any codes.

You might take a look thru the 718 coding thread too. I think most of those options will apply to the 987.

https://rennlist.com/forums/718-gts-4-0-gt4-gt4rs-spyder-25th-anniversary/1302119-piwis-3-coding-retrofit-and-feature-request.html

Fixing the coolant gage/speedometer to be accurate, changing number of tap to pass blinks, comfort open/close of windows, mirror auto retract on lock, add g-meter to MFD, and disabling the seat belt warning are pretty quick/easy to do.

I don't think PIWIS is going to diagnose that. I think there is going to be a mechanic checking the sensors. Think the parking brake sensor, the top release sensor, etc. My mechanic had a 986 in with a top problem. He was explaining the time it took to diagnose it. This wasn't simple PIWIS diagnostic issue. Just my $.02.

Both vehicles back. $1300 bill. Could have been much worse. Anyone utilizing a Porsche dealership needs to really find a reputable indy shop. I don't have any clue how many thousands of dollars I have saved.

Not a real big fan of owning/maintaining Porsche's by any stretch, but some might find this pretty entertaining, as I did. It's a little mezmerizing, imho, and you do have to give it to the Germans, they know how to do this stuff.

Which part? LOL? If you are refering to PIWIS, that is the Porsche diagnostic tool that mechanics use.

Oh fun. Spongy shifter on the old Boxster. Broken shifter or shift cable linkage. Get to diagnose tomorrow.

My Cayenne started whining yesterday tied to RPM. First thought it was the transmission/tcase, but it was happening in park/neutral. Sounded like it was coming from the front passenger side of the engine bay.

Hoping it isn't the PS or PDCC pump. PS fluid was a touch low but PDCC fluid was fine. I'm about 7k miles away from having to replace both reservoirs and flush the system. Of course, no local stores carry Pentosin CHF202 and I don't think there's a compatible "generic" fluid you can use.

Noise was happening during traffic in Austin but once I got home a few hours later I couldn't hear it.

Dumb question. When was the last cabin filter change? Its under the passenger glove box area?

Around 4000 miles ago.

It is a bit strange - the AC wasn't blowing full blast when I left yesterday. I didn't have my code reader to see if the BKE was throwing any new codes. Since I'm running a facelift BKE and button panel to get Sport+, there are some oddities with the blend door actuators. AC started blowing normally after 4-5 miles.

I'm still hearing the whine. Just not as loud. I found some Pentosin and it isn't related to low PS fluid. I haven't had a chance to get under it yet. Hopefully this weekend.

I've been working with a tuner on a TCM tune since the transmission on the 958 is so sluggish. Received the first beta tune this morning, but I'm a bit hesitant to put it on until I figure out this noise.

Have you watched engine and oil temps? I know what my normal is and when I saw those deviate, I knew something was up. Turned out to be the coolant shutters behind the front bumper. And that impacted the AC also.

If you have those, you may check them out.

I have. They're all normal as is oil pressure. No shutters on 958,1

It sounds like a power steering whine. That's the first thing I thought when it started. PS and PDCC use the same pump. My gut says the PDCC hose's rubber isolators on the front subframe are broken. Pretty common issue. Just didn't get a chance to pull the under trays this weekend.
