How long do you want to ignore this user?
I recently agreed to sell a 3rd vehicle we had laying around not being used to a neighbor. We are meeting up tonight to sign paperwork/title and finalize the deal. My registration sticker on that vehicle is expired (which he is aware of). Will that cause him any additional issues or any concerns on my end? Would it be better for me to get in inspected and registration up to date before finalizing the sale?

get it inspected before you go to tax office no need for registering it, they will have you sign a form regarding that

Thanks for response. I wasn't planning to go to tax office with him. Just signing Form 130U, title, & bill of sale + taking my plates. Is there another form I should sign for this I can provide the buyer?

I'd also suggest submitting the transfer notification online along with your 130u. Good call on plates, never leave them on when selling anymore.

Current registration and inspection make zero difference to the new owner

This. In fact you don't want it registered in your name in case he blows through a toll road.

well not having passed inspection might make a difference to the buyer and could delay getting paid, just handing over docs and trusting him to transfer is a bad idea. The car is still registered in your name whether or not it has current registration or not. Go to the tax office with him, you don't know if he's just going to flip it to someone else, then you've got a headache and a soured relationship with your neighbor.

Selling the car "as is where is" if it fails inspection, not your problem anymore ?

Inspections are cheap. Get it inspected and hand him the proof at the time of sale.
Not required, but a good faith thing to do.
Registration is just paperwork, he needs to register it in his name anyway.
File the ownership transfer online to protect yourself from liability.

Get it inspected.

Go with him to the tax office.

Make sure it's no longer your responsibility at all

Fill out a form VTR-346 complete with the buyer's information, keep with signed Bill of Sale as proof.

Just do this. Keep it simple and keep your plates. Why are we making it complicated by coordinating schedules to meet at the tax office during the week (don't forget to book your appointment in advance!)???

My son-in-law just got a car from my brother. No appointment needed in his county.

If you have a toll tag, remember to remove and cancel it.

Transaction completed. Cash deal.

  • Form 130U
  • VTR 346
  • Bill of sale
  • Have copies of his driver license
  • Filled out online transfer form
  • Removed toll tags/plates

This is a normal guy who is in my neighborhood around the corner from me who was buying this for his soon to be 16 yr old. I would 100% meet at tax office if it was a random person or they seemed sketchy, but this wasn't the case.

For the record, I did go get the inspection completed before and also gave him a full tank of gas. Thanks for all the replies.

Both were unnecessary, from a legal standpoint , but nice of you to do, and a good idea because he was a neighbor.

I sold a car several years ago, to a young couple who drove 120 miles to get it. They were very nice, obviously not making a lot of money. I made sure they had a full tank before they headed home. And this was a '94 Caprice with a 26 gallon tank.
