The wife and I both need new cars in the next year or so and the two in the subject line are on the list of possible purchases. Wondering if anyone has any experience with either especially around reliability. I've been a Consumer Reports guy for a long time and they are not big fans of either of these from a reliability standpoint. MDX gets 51/100 on reliability and the Volvo gets 33/100. Both less than stellar but the wife doesn't want to hear it, thinks Consumer Reports is full of it.

I'd choose the Acura in this situation. Its a Honda and can be serviced at Honda dealers.

The only way I'd choose the Volvo is if I lived close to Volvo of West Houston (Awesome place) and had plenty of disposable income.

New Volvo's look great but the powertrains aren't what they used to be. They are no longer million-mile cars.

Agree with wife. Consumer reports is pay to play. How does the Honda Pilot rank?

Good question. CR gives the 2024 Pilot 50/100 for reliability. I'd be replacing my 2019 which they're currently rating 40/100. Wife would be replacing 2015 Audi Q5 that they rate 34/100.

Haven't loved my Pilot and the Audi has had a few issues but these seem really low. Not sure I buy what they're selling

MDX is a glorified Pilot. High on reliability, but I think you'll be disappointed on the luxury side. My parents have an MDX and it's just not as nice as other luxury lines.

I have had 2 MDX since 2000. Comfortable easy driving vehicles. Only issues were transmissions which could be my driving. My last one, a 2012 just started having issues after 220K miles.
I never did figure the IT components which seemed to be compounded with the newer models.
I like Honda engine and now drive a Ridgeline.

I have an Acura TLX that replaced my Honda Accord Premium. The TLX is a step up from the Honda for sure in Luxury. It's not German level, but I'd rather have Japanese reliability and cost of ownership. If you are debating whether to spring for the Type S.......do it

We got my wife a 2023 MDX...she loves it and I really love to drive it also. It's a fun drive.

It's not very old, so I'm not sure about reliability, but I really like the SUV

Any thoughts on the trackpad thing versus a true touch screen? I've got hesitations about that coming from a car with touch.

That is my #1 complaint. Touch screen is better. I initially worried about her messing with it and getting in an accident.

That said, you get used to it quickly and it's actually pretty intuitive once you figure it out. But I'd still prefer the touch screen.

Yeah at this point I'll probably wait for a 2025 bc of that.

Probably a good call. It was dumb of them to try to reinvent the wheel.

But I really love the car...way more than I thought we would.

I love the track pad. I find it's much easier to keep my eyes on the road and it quickly becomes intuitive plus your screen doesn't get all fingerprinty. It's one of my favorite things about the car. The most used controls are still knobs and buttons so your really just talking navigation and music. Compared to my Ram or Wife's Tesla where everything is touch screen it is a much better and easier to use system. Honda is the best at making things that make sense

You lease one and the other you hand to your kids when they turn 16.

Why would you replace something that is only 5 years old? Has it been a basket full of problems?

If not, keep it running. Even if something major fails it's cheaper than new.

The 2.0T G10 Accord is actually faster than the 2.0T TLX 0-60.

Yeah replacing is only a "maybe" right now but it has had multiple issues. Transmission being the latest. It's got a slip around 3rd or 4th gear. I need to get it in for a diagnosis. Also likely needs suspension work as overly noisy driver side on bumps etc. Finally makes a very weird like "re-linking" noise when going from cruising speed to acceleration on the highway at about 50. "Re-linking" is the only way to describe it…it's very strange.

All this leading to a vehicle that I don't find trustworthy for anything beyond around town. And this is our road trip car. And yeah lots of undiagnosed with no estimate for repairs so replacing the vehicle is not a done deal but is more likely than not at this point. Already replaced the timing belt (no way it should have been required) and also replaced fuel injectors and feed line after it went into limp mode on the side of the road. Replaced backup camera and has random electrical gremlins from time to time like seat memory forgetting / failing then coming back for no reason. Weird crap like that.

Well that sucks.

You obviously need a new Mini-Van for road trips.

Look for a used Highlander if you can live without the luxury of the MDX.

I wouldn't know anything about that.
