To file a claim or not to file a claim, that is the question

We got caught out in the open in the hail storm that passed through Wimberley last night. I've got a 2006 Mark LT that I baby. I estimate value before the storm was $7-8k. The golf ball size hail took out the windshield and put three or four dozen divots in the hood, body and trim. Destroyed bed cover. My comprehensive deductible is $2k.

Anyone have past experience with a comprehensive claim on an older vehicle like this?
I assume repair will either be impossible or total out the vehicle?
Even if I get full value for the vehicle minus deductible, is it worth it for the hit to our insurance rates?

Windshield is relatively cheap, cheapest way to go for the hood and trim is likely replace & paint as needed. PDR the panels which are not easily replaced.

Get a quote from multiple body shops basis you paying out of pocket.

I wouldn't file the claim. Fix the windshield out of pocket and then just live with the dings on an 18 year old vehicle.

Reason for not filing a claim?? My understanding is in Texas your rates shouldn't be affected by hail damage claims. Anyone know if true?

I need to replace a windshield and have Farm Bureau insurance.

The deductible on the windshield used to be about $50, but I can't find anything mentioning that in particular.

My policy has a $1,000 deductible for "other than collision".

The policy is coming up for renewal and if it doesn't even cover the windshield for a more reasonable deductible, I'm going to be dropping it to liability only.

Talk to your agent, but it should not affect your insurance rate as this was "out of your control". Why are you carrying full insurance on an 18 year old vehicle if you never intend to use it? This will likely total it out, if you don't use it now, my advice would be to switch to liability only as you are likely to never use it.

We got hit as well. We have a 2024 model car. Filed a claim. Never seen hail like that. Took out back windshield and dents everywhere.

Johnson City got hit pretty hard. Talked to some of my buddies and former colleagues at PEC that said it was absolutely crazy.

Don't use insurance for windshield, tow or rental car.

It will count as a claim and will be held against you.

Well, with some trepidation, I opened a claim. Will let the board knows what happens.

On a related note, I switched from Nationwide to Progressive last week (old policy still in effect). Saved a ton on home + auto policies.

they will total your car

ask to retain the title and get a check for difference unless you don't want the car
