Recommended Years for Used Lexus GX460

I'm researching used SUVs and found an old thread where the GX460 was highly recommended. The goal is to mod with my son over the next few years, then he would drive it when he gets his permit. I've seen some cool overland builds, similar to THIS or some of the GXs from Duggy's Garage out of Houston. Should I be looking at certain year models or does anyone have any general recommendations?

Another part of the equation is that I'll be trading in or selling my 2018 Chevy 2500HD High Country Duramax, 1 accident on Carfax: small van t-boned me going about 10 mph. Carfax listed the accident as severe, which I've disputed with no success. The body shop I used for the repair said Carfax will classify the wreck as severe if any work is done to the cab. Basically, they'll consider it a rollover accident even if it is not, but I'm not sure if that is 100% accurate.

Any info or help on the GX purchase, other makes/models I should be looking for in the same category, and/or sell of the 2500 would be greatly appreciated.

The GX460 has pretty much been the same vehicle for its lifespan. Some aesthetic updates to the front end happened every few years which should be obvious when shopping. The main interior updates happened in 2022 with the infotainment center changing in appearance and adding CarPlay. In 2020 I think it was they added 360 degree cameras as an option. Those are kind of the big changes. When shopping for used ones their features will vary by quite a bit, particularly, in the off-road tech, for it being a vehicle that didn't change much (crawl control, MTS, etc.).

I've got a 12.
The owner of a Lexus service place here in Houston told me to look at 18s and newer going forward.

The old thread you linked was one I started. LOL. A few weeks after that post, I found and purchased a 2017 GX that only had 10,000 miles on it. 4 years and 45k miles later, I still love driving it every day. I consider it to be one of the best vehicle purchases I ever made.

You won't regret the decision if you pull the trigger on one.

I purchased a 2018 with 23,000 miles on it 2 years ago. Just rolled on 60K and have 0 regrets. Great vehicle.

The biggest issue with the tech on this year was the lack of CarPlay (for me, I was just used to it), and no remote start since the Lexus App connectivity was killed. So, I installed a BeatSonic CarPlay interface and a 12VoltSolutions remote start system. It does everything I need/want now. I was especially happy with the 12Volt solution, that thing just works. The BeatSonic works about 90% of the time. Sometimes I have to actually stop, restart the car, then get going again because the AUX interface with BeatSonic wigs out. But, still a good enough solution for me.

My goal is to drive this thing until my now 12 year old son turns 16 and hand it down to him. Then, I am getting a GX550 Overtrail. By then, my daughter will be off at college, so I won't need the 3rd row any longer. We will see if I hold off that long, but that is my current plan. I have no good reason to upgrade sooner, so the only thing that would change that plan would be if we end up going used Truck for him instead but he probably won't get much of a used truck for the value of the GX in 4 years and I won't be chipping in extra.

Great vehicle. When you find one you like, check the air suspension for proper functionality - those can go bad and are $ to fix. Also check the rear door (tailgate) to make sure it all works too (I can't remember the specifics about the issue that can occur with it). The 460 has a timing chain, but the 470 has a timing belt - if you look at a 470, check that the timing belt has been serviced. Just make sure everything works and nothing leaks.

edited to add: check the functionality of the center differentia lock, and make sure that 4 Lo works - the actuators can get sticky if not exercised on occasion.

I would make sure you get one with KDSS. For on road handling as much as off-road capability

Pretty sure KDSS is on every gx460 unless previous owner removed it.

He claims they fixed some of the known quality issues (valley leak, ride height leaks, etc)

Been driving a 2017 for about 9 months. Mechanically, it's been great, but there are some parts that haven't been quite the quality I expected.

Prior to purchase, I researched year models to avoid…I remember there being a fair amount of info online.

Here is a 2021 GX460 with less than 1,000 miles. Wonder what the story is

It has a red interior which lowers the resale value quite a bit. Thats my best guess anyway without looking at the mechanicals.

Same, looks really good when paired with Ultrasonic blue they have on the IS500. Never thought about pairing it with silver, but it looks good

Any suggestions on what my mileage cutoff should be?

I found a 2017 at a dealership in Dallas with 98k miles, luxury package, within my budget.

Also, does anyone have a DFW mechanic that would inspect for me?

98k is barely broken in

I just hit 200k on my gx470

Bought a 2023 and love it. The CarPlay is a game changer and the app allows my wife to remote start and either cool it or warm the interior. Hope to keep a long while. Great lights too at night. Triple beam work really well.
